Pic #4 is Dick Jesse's Mr Unswitchable funny car before paint.

Nice little Detroit suburban neighborhood in the background, like Royal Oak maybe.

That is a cool shot of Motor City Dragway. My dad worked there on weekends while working at GM Research during the week. He was saying that they were the safety inspectors making sure people had all of the proper safety equipment and tires for the class. He said sometimes they weren't too popular when they had to stop someone who's car wasn't up to snuff. I remember a little from that time being there, I was very young. I love seeing these old pictures.

Seeing the photo of Fireball Roberts, I remembered that he had died after a fiery crash at Charlotte.
The caption of the photo remarking that he didn't wear a fire suit was somewhat ironic seeing how he died as a result of second and third degree burns.

I don't think fire suits were widely available in 1963. Even if they were, I don't think most of the drivers would have worn one. It was a different time!

I didn't realize that Jungle Jim ever ran the Pontiac-hemi against Chrisman in the [funny] Comet. Seems somewhat ironic, since Jack drove Mickey's Pontiac-hemi dragster to Top Eliminator at Indy '62!
Thanks for the picture Rob.

Not sure how long they ran the Pontiac Hemi. I think valve train issues were the reason they switched to a Chrysler Hemi. Of course Brutus ran Nitro while Mickeys dragster was running gas. The NHRA lifted the fuel ban in ‘63. By ‘64, Jack was in the Ford camp. Jim left Arrington in ‘67 to run his own car.

Definitely a better time for drag racing…….

I believe it was less than a couple of months with the M/T hemi. I like to believe that I'm the only one who ever solved the lifter-to-pushrod angle problem (18 degrees intake/21 degrees exhaust)- routinely turning 9,000 RPM on pulling tracks.
