Default Distributor gear

I have a Comp roller cam in my engine and a Davis distributor I'd like to install. What distributor gear are people using with a roller cam? Thanks

Seems like a lot of guys like the composite BOP Engineering gear. I have one ready to install. I think that or a bronze gear are the only options out there

This is my go-to:

https://www.holley.com/products/igni...rs/parts/85631

If you want, after @1000 miles, you can switch to the BOP, it's less than half the price of the BOP, and the first gear is usually somewhat sacrificial. If you don't switch, or regardless of which gear you use, check it after @1000 miles.

You need to know the dizzy shaft diameter too. (.491/.500)

I've dressed the last few I did, it helps, but there always seems to be some 'mating' wear.

I use a honing stone.

Best advice, check it to be sure.

Articles from MSD will point out the effort that goes into a ring-and-pinion installation. Yet many don't think twice about the distributor gear/cam gear relationship unless performance starts to suffer. How the dist gear and cam gear mesh is just as important as the quality of the metals involved. MSD states the excessive clearance between the gear teeth shouldn't be fixed by shoving the distributor farther into the hole; this screws up the proper wear pattern.

Its only less than half the price if the BOP gear is for a RAV/SD455
.500 and .491 gears are 150 $
I ran a BOP gear for over a decade, did not dress a thing ( but cam was used) and it looks new.
I reused it for the last engine. The Comp Cams core had a gear that looked very smooth. Almost polished. So I ran it as is.
Tom s has had great luck with running a stock iron gear for 5 minutes then switching to BOP/bronze

Running the stock gear is something I learned form Joe Sherman(RIP).We just ran it for breakin on the Dyno or run stand. We always ran the drilled dist gallery plug.Tom

As a note, a quick way to check (generally) gear clearance is to grab the rotor and rock it back & forth.

Another way to check is with a timing light, blip the throttle, and see how much timing goes past initial on decell (RPM).

Most don't realize there's a problem until they actually pull the dizzy and check.

Running a standard gear for a short period of time is a great idea, it works, and have done that before. Even after dressing the cam gear.

He also said that high pressure pumps are much harder on everything than hi flow
