Help picking a converter.
Hey all. Need help picking a converter. Very little to no knowledge on them. lol
69 GTO 3:23 gears, cower cam, .040 400, rpm intake. Using 200-4R. Just a street driver, zero track use. Not sure other info needed. Thank you.

INT/EXH - Dur @ .050” Lift: 228°/235° RR: 1.5/1.5 Gross Lift: .479”/.494” LSA: 112° RPM: 1600-1800 to 6200 Redline: 6500

Smartest thing you could do is to give Cliff Ruggles a pm on here.
Bought several converters from him and every one was dead nutz on the money! He knows what he’s doing. Blindingly fast shipping also. |

I am running that cam ! Just FYI you need compression for that cam and I'm zero decked running 10.75 to1 461 edelbrock heads with 1.52 rockers. I had Coan engineering in Indiana make me one in early 2022 coa-20211-4 and I love it. Stock tires 225/70/14 on the rear and it burns them off when i get into it. It has the original 10 bolt safe-t-track but I have the small tire so them break free to not stress the rear too much.

Good converter = $800
Okay budget converter = $300 - $400 So that leaves out a custom converter from Cliff. Your best bet on a budget would likely be something along the lines of a Hughes GM25. For myself I always spend the money for a quality custom converter. Your driving pleasure and satisfaction should matter enough to spend a little more rather than regret buying cheaper and never being truly happy.

Thanks bman. I understand, but unfortunately some house holds especially in this economy don’t have thousands at a time to put into a project. Some do need to do what is affordable and not the very best so we can still enjoy the hobby.

You would do well to pm cliff…
His converters he sells are very competitively priced. Add to that the fact that they work first time out of the box like their supposed to, for a Pontiac engine, that saves time and aggravation having to pull the damn thing back out a second time because the converter builder “oopsed” the first time…. That alone is worth $$$. We’ve used quite a few manufacturers at work for quite a few projects, and the only 3 that did what they were bought to do …came from Cliff. Not saying I’m trying to be a paid shill advertisement for him, I’m just saying the stuff flat works like advertised. No more, no less. |

One of the biggest "bangs" for the buck is a custom torque converter made specifically for your combination. Another point is that, Pontiac converters need different properties than the Chevrolet World stuff does. Save up, if you have to!!! Have fun with that cool car, in the "Shire!!! Jeff

why not try the B&M you have. The description in The B&M catalog closely matches your engine specs.

Call Lane at PTC and buy what he recommends. Or Cliff.
A converter is one place you do not want to cheap out. |

The 20412 B&M converter won’t work in the 200R4. It is for a TH350 or TH400.
200R4 has a lower first gear, doesn’t really require much of a stall with street tires, you could just run a stock converter if your on a budget. Reman is less than $150. |

The 3 speed idea isn't a bad way to go. Depends how performance oriented you are. Since you stated no racing, just a cruiser, numerically low rear gears and a 3 speed gets the job done.
3.23's aren't bad, I'd be inclined to leave that be. Dad bought his 69 GTO new with 3.23's and daily drove it for 20 years and put 180,000 miles on it like that. 70 mph and 3000 rpm everywhere. That motor still ran decent when we pulled it. Anyway, even a 3.08 setup will still buzz on the highway so it doesn't really keep things quiet and there is still wear and tear. It's nothing close to what an overdrive will do for you but it works well enough when on A budget. You'll have to weigh how much you actually plan to drive the car too. 1,000 miles or even 2000 miles a year? I wouldn't even bother with the overdrive idea. If you're like me and put 6000 to 10,000 miles a year on the car, then yeah I'd be doing the overdrive. |
