I know with 455s, or long stroke engines, there's a chance of sucking the stock pan dry, and the general fix is to run an qt extra. Windage is the factor, as well as slosh & slow drainback.
There are threads here about it, search it. If you have a windage tray, it helps with windage, which is the only drawback when running 'too much oil'. Of course, you don't want to fill the engine up to the valve cover breathers, but that's a no-brainer. Most racers etc will tell you windage can cost HP, general consensus is in the 5-10 HP range. If that's felt as a dramatic difference, you're probably only making 100hp total. I run 7+1 in my Canton pans, the docs are not right in saying 6+1, the pan is listed as a 7qt, not a 6qt. So you be the judge. .

Pretty sure the calibration of dip sticks is base off the pan rail on the block.

I’m going to use a Milodon 7qt. pan on my motor. Because I added splayed caps to it, it’s easier to have a pan mounted dipstick. To determine the correct fill level, I took a factory pan and added 5 qts of water to it. It measured 4” from the pan rail. I then took the Milodon pan and added 7 qts of water to it. That also measured 4” from the pan rail. That will put my Spotts windage tray about an inch above the oil with the engine not running. I will set my dipstick full level at the 4” mark and add whatever amount is needed to read full. I am running a remote filter and possibly an accusump so the total amount hasn’t really been determined yet.

Accusump doesn't matter, as long as it's filled prior to calculating oil volume/level. (Dipstick calibration) .
