Skip, Larry, and others:

I'll (hopefully) have my Formula ready for the PSN event in Dallas in June. Preparations are progressing VERY slowly but I'm still planning on being there and I have a couple of REALLY dumb questions concerning safety equipment. Hopefully the car will run somewhere in the high 12's.

What will a NHRA tech inspection on the car involve?

What will the driver be required to have and wear such as a helmet or any other safety gear?

After all this work, I just don't want to show up unprepared!

TIA,
Lloyd

Snell approved helmet & seat belts just regular seat belts. Driveshaft loop. Overflow can for radiator & no more than 1ft of rubber hose for fuel.

Thanks Scott. Man, I sure don't want to have to install a loop, maybe I can sneak it by - since it LOOKS stock and I'll be running treaded DOT tires. Guess I ought to start shopping for a helmet though.

On the radiator overflow container, has anyone seen a fairly nice (OE looking) reservoir that'll install on my Firebird. I'd use the later style OE reservoir but it uses the RH fender to radiator support brace as a bracket and my '72 doesn't have those!

Saw a guy Saturday night who tried to "sneak by" without a loop. Car ran mid 13's, when the shaft broke going through the trap, he shot over in a field going round and round. He was lucky he didn't roll it (no bar) but the shaft came through floor, hit the seat and messed him up a little. I bet he won't figure the loop next time.

Lloyd, Here's a driveshaft loop that bolts on. Hopefully he has one that will fit your car.

Driveshaft Loops

I'm in the same boat as you Lloyd. Going back to racing after many years of not.

I have a question.

If you run slicks intead of Drag Radials - what is tech going to look for? ie; wheel studs?

Indian Advetures sells one that bolts to the tranny so you don't have to drill any holes.

That's what my link is for in my last post Scott. I should have written it that way.

For an over-flow tank that looks OEM.....I just got another window washer fluid tank and bracket.
Looks very neat and tidy.

I bought one of the IA driveshaft loops. Fit great and took about 30 minutes to install.

Plus they're cheap.

I have one of the IA loops too that I need to install. I heard a while back that those things create some sort of harmonic vibration because the loop-end is not rigidly mounted. Anyone have those problems?

My IA loop actually rests up against the floor. And it doesn't make any vibratory noises. It's a tight fit under 65 GTO's. lol

6567GTO:

I appreciate the link - ordered the TH400 short shaft loop yesterday. Thanks!

grumpybear:

I had considered just that - good idea and I've got a spare WW reservoir.

Thanks everyone for the advice. Now I've just got to get my dead a$$ in gear and get all this work done on the car!

Oh - one more question: what style and brand of helmet does everyone use, and where should I order one from?

Thanks again,
Lloyd

I'm ordering one of those loops myself. I have a 4-speed 67 GTO and I have always wondered where you could get one of those bolt in jobs.

Now I know........Thanks 6567GTO!

Lloyd, They (for better or worse) are generally fairly lenient on tech. I have yet to have any one look under my low F body for a loop, especially the BIG tech guy at Baytown. The IA to me looks too round to fit the 2nd gen cars. There is a unibody brace about where the short tailshaft one is behind a TH350. Also the driveshaft is slightly offset in the tunnel, tight clerance there. Need to be more oval than round as it comes(Dick you out there needs some mods!)I've got one last year but it won't fit without some tweaking.Since the TH 400 is longer maybe it wil be past the fram support.

I also did not want to drill the floors. Used studs in the seat bolt holes to secure mine. Uses 5/16 instead of 3/8 per NHRA rules. Its a bottom half of a Summit loop. Upper part too oval to fit tunnel. The lakewood looks like it is oval enough to fit.

Bring a helmet, be sure the battery is bolted down. That is one thing they always check at all tracks.

Thanks for the info, Skip. Since I've already got a loop coming from IA, I'll see how it fits on the TH400.

Guess I'll run down to the local rice rocket dealer for a helmet. Think I may go open face for comfort, but . . .

Later,
Lloyd
