i'm going to buy a new intake to replace my crappy street dominator next month. i'm running ported '68 #16's now that flow 262/190 and plan on upgrading to 72cc e-heads next winter. what intake can i buy now that will work with the 16's and the aluminum heads? cam is a solid roller, .272 duration @ .050, .587 lift with 1.6 rocker. i wanna see some improvement on my current setup and not have to change intakes for the e-heads. lemme know whatcha think...

b-man- how do i get an avatar like yours?

on the technical side, do you know how much taller the victor is than the street dominator? i'm going to pull the stud for the air cleaner from the carb, but i don't wanna buy one and not clear the stock hood.

The Victor is about 2" taller than the Street Dominator. The measurement was taken in the center of the carb flange on the SD so it may be a little taller since its angled.

It will not clear a stock formula hood. You will need a TA hood and a Dude Scoop...

Tigger's lookin' a bit 'happy' himself.

If you want to keep the Formula hood without mods your current intake may be your best choice. I have seen a Dominator carb mounted on a modded Street Dominator on a friend's '66 GTO. He was running in the mid 10s, everything fit under the hood. The engine was a 455 with E-heads prepped by SD Peformance, the intake work was done there too.

david- it won't fit even with nothing on top of the carb? i'm getting a VFN cowl hood, but was hoping to buy the intake first due to the wait time on the hoods.

With a victor intake and a 4150 Holley and a thin NOS plate it was flush with the opening on my TA's hood scoop opening. If you could get the hood to close it's doubtful you would get enough air in the carb.

Also Check with Ken, he is making a Glass TA hood for the 70 to 76 birds...

Eddy, I agree on the SD intake, I've seen a ported SD intake ET the same as a Stock Victor. For a race motor the Victor is better but the SD can work.

RUMAIR, don't sell the SD intake short. That is a gooood manifold for a 455 with D-ports. When you go to the E-heads--well I do not have any experience therefore I will not say more.

after hearing what david and eddy have to say, maybe i'll spend my money elsewhere. i do need to get a manual steering rack and relocate the alternator.

That part is easy. Get a mid 80's S-10 manual box and Paul Spotts Alt Kit.

Easy.

Then Buy a Hood from Ken...

i thought about just removing the pump and capping the lines...that would probably be easier and cheaper than buying and installing a manual rack.

seriously, how hard is it to do the swap? should i go to the parts counter at the chebby dealer to get the manual rack? do i need a different size belt for the alt. kit? i figure i ought to do this now so i'll be ready for an electric water pump down the road. do you know how much ken's hood costs?

Are you actually swapping to a rack & pinion, or just going to a manual steering box?

If you're just switching to a manual box, you'll need:

- Pitman Arm Puller
- Impact Wrench
- 250 ft/lb Torque Wrench
- Steering Box
- Possibly a different rag joint and/or intermediate steering shaft

I recently put an AGR power steering box in my '69 Firebird, and aside from the pain of purchasing the box (and finding someone that actually had one in stock), it was an easy job.

There are two bolts that hold the two halfs of the rag joint together.

The box itself is held on by 3 or 4 bolts that go through the front framerail (accessable from the inside of the drivers wheelwell).

You REALLY need the pitman arm puller, and an impact wrench to run it. The arm is a VERY tight press fit on the output shaft of the box. My pitman arm puller cost $14 on sale at NAPA.

To install the pitman arm on the new box, you pound the snot out of it with the impact for a while, and then tighten it to 180ft/lbs.

I tightened the pitman arm to centerlink nut to 14 ft/lbs and then however much more it took to like up the castellations and get the cotter pin in.

BTW I think Flaming River now sells a "super lightweight" manual box in an aluminum case.

jon- my buddy mentioned that the steering shaft might have to be changed. somebody else told me to go to a place that sells mainly roundy-round stuff and get a manual box for a circle track car. i'll try to find more info. on that Flaming River box; do they have a website?

Flaming river = Big $$$

Used S-10 box = $75.00 or less.

Use your pitman arm and it's a bolt in!

Done, easy, no need for big bucks...

s-10 box-$10 at the right wrecking yard! at our right wrecking yard I found 5 of them the other day! I know on my 83 trans am I use the trans am pitman arm, with the s-10 box and the shaft from my TA, works great! I even ran around for about a year using the 16" TA wheels with FAT tires up front! no problem, but it is much better now with my skinnys!

Ditto to Dave's comment! It is a bolt in and very few tools are needed! You can basically drop your pitman arm off of your box while on the car. Then separate the steering with the single shaft pin on the box and undo 3 bolts that hold it to the frame. Reverse process to install and one thing to keep in mind is to try and position both pitman arms the same prior to swap to keep steering wheel position as close as possible (centered)! May take 30 min. or two hours depending on air tools and rust! Believe me, I tried the ol' removing the pump and looping the line trick, it works but, it is half a&& and it will steer nicer this way!

thanks for the advice guys, this certainly sounds doable provided i get my hands on the right tools. what years of the S-10 should i be looking to get a box out of (can it be a blazer or a truck, or just a truck)? do i need a pitman arm puller and an impact to get the box out of a truck at the junkyard? i might go hunting this saturday...
