Default Andre and goatman65, heres the 64 he won't restore

O.k guys, two years ago I told you about this car and you wanted pics, I told you that he put it in a building and was going to start restoring it. Not true. I just didn't want to P.O the guy by putting pics of this car out there and be inundated with inquiries about it. Well I changed my mind, and I was just out there last week, and the car is still sitting in the same place it has for 42 yrs. So Andre and goatman65, this if for you.Click image for larger version

Here are the last ones, I did not get pics of under the hood, but the first time I saw this car I had an old cell phone and took pics of under the hood, and the tripower is still on it, even the three carb air filters are in place.Click image for larger version

That has the rare 64 GTO camper option, and I just thought the 74 had that option. Looks like a light buffing will pretty it right up....LOL

Walking up and seeing something like that would sure get the adrenaline pumping, but what a shame that it's out in the elements wasting away. Thanks for posting those pics!

Shame.

Apparently he thinks that camper shell is offering protection for his prized GTO.

Soon there won't be much left of the old girl.

is that a 'steering damper' in the front end? anyone seen that before?
as for the camper option, I believe that this was the GTO Westfalia edition, later used by VW

Yeah that is a steering damper, I actually found one in a box that I bought from someone on the board and never took out of the package. Was going to use on my '66 with manual steering, but then couldn't find it.

As for that old '64, I just don't know. Yeah, it appears to be an original, and probably matching numbers tripower, 4 speed car, and that is exciting.
In the grand scheme of life, and it being 2011, I think that someone wanting a car in that configuration would probably be better off with a restored car.
While the car appears complete, the elements have pitted so much, that it is going to take a gigantic effort (time and $$) to get this car looking like it should.

If I was guessing at a price... $7,500 or thereabouts.

Thanks for posting. I better get going on my '64 Lemans convertible before it gets like that. Definitely some motiviation.

Tim John, (or anyone else) was that a popular thing to do back in the day? or do you think that this car has been used for road racing?
looking at the photos it jumped out at me as being odd,

The steering dampers were used on manual steering cars and most were installed by the dealer. Mostly used on '64 - '65. I'm not sure if they were factory installed as an option.

I talked to the owner about it when I first went out there 2 yrs ago, and he said that when he bought it the guy he got if from said the rear end was blown and didn't want to put any money into it. According to him this was back in 69, same year as the plates that are on it right now. He said that everything worked on it,(motor and trans, just a bad rear end.) And as always, he said he was going to restore it and still there it sits, he says he has so many other projects going on??

I'm not sure why they stopped using the steering dampener, but I can tell you that when you straighten out of a turn with manual steering, the steering wheel whips around, and wants to break your arm if you are not paying attention. I think the dampener absorbs some of that energy.
