need a pontiac engine cradle/dolly
i am built to the short block...oil pan not on yet....i need to take my motor from the engine builder to my house to paint it...how do i move it, do i need to make some sort of cart? if so, to what dimensions? i dont need to drive it far, only a couple of miles, it will go from engine stand, to cherry picker, to cart, to back of truck, to cherry picker, back to engine stand..does anybody sell a rolling cart for motors?
i have just seen many engine cradle makers on-line,,mostly chevy or ford, the only pontiac one i see doesnt have wheels...anybody make one for pontiacs with wheels? |

I got mine from Northern Tool.
Too bad you're on the left coast, you could borrow one of mine. |

Get one of the engine stands built by Indian Adventures. Put some casters on it and you are set.

I've transported motors on an old truck tire and a block of wood. Works. Tied off of course.

I took (2) 2x8''s. cut them 3'-0" or so. then ripped about 1" off the edge on one end of both of them. This was to clear the front of the oil pan and timing cover. Then I spread them apart, about 10" or so. I then took (2) other pcs. and put them on edge, perpendicular to the those (2) pcs. and srewed them together, so the oil pan fit between the opening fairly tight, side to side. It rested on the flange of the oil pan. I put a strap over it, on the back of the pickup. I have my old engine sitting on it in a corner of the garage. It looks like an "I" with a space between the middle. Simple to make.

I have always used old tires with good results. Of course I always strap the block down to keep it from rolling off of the tire.

I made one out of extruded aluminum from company called "Item". We use at work. Came out great.

bobby j1, i dont see any bolt holes in yours? does the engine just sit due to its own weight, or does it get bolted in?

Check out this post from a while back. I built a couple engine dollies from scrap wood I had in my shop.

norton, Thank You. It's just sitting on the stand under it's own weight. It's on little rubber pads on the oil pan flange. Very stable, I was able to torque all the clutch, flywheel, and tranny bolts on it. It rolls very easy. I have a slight slant in my floor, and it will take off on me. I always had to set the brakes. Yeah, I was able to mount the shifter on it and check all linkage adjustments without anything in my way. The paint is from Hirsch Automotive, 74 - 77 Pontiac Met. Blue high gloss. It matched the factory paint perfectly. In the one attached picture the valve covers are the factory paint from 76. Motor is in the car now.

No, I lightly sand balsted the bell housing and powder coated it with clear. The tail shaft is painted with Eastwoods cast aluminum. The main case is a brand new Auto Gear M22 super case, and then I used clear paint on the whole tranny. I shipped the tranny to PA for some work. When I got it back, UPS had dropped it and broke two ears on the original case (see attached pic). So they paid for a new super case. Yeah I know it looks unstabile but it actually isn't. With all that iron on the front compared to the aluminum out the back.

NOrton, I do not yet know if there is a way to bolt the engine to that stand, I did not receive it yet. Should have it in a couple of days and I will let yo know.

I've built a stand out of scrap wood before, it's easy enough to do and it worked fine. I used it to haul an engine across town in my trailer. Like others said, a big truck tire also works well. Just make sure that whatever you do, you strap it down well...I was driving down the highway one time when a guy pulled out in front of me, stepped on the gas, and the big block Chevy he had in the back of his pickup fell out right in the middle of the road.
