Oil level seems fine and no smell of gas.
I mentioned earlier that car would only run for about 15 seconds off the float bowl with old carb and same with rebuilt carb which Greg Reid thought seemed in line. If I assume the bowl holds 1/2 cup of fuel (?) than every 30 seconds the car consumes 1 cup of fuel or 1 gallon every 8 minutes or 1.25 gallons in 10 minutes. Bad math/logic? |

I am using a stock (Carter) fuel pump. The manual refers to it as a vapor return line, is that what you are referring to Gary H.?
Sorry for whats probably a dumb question... It would probably make more sense than my math, lol Last edited by dv657172; 12-06-2023 at 05:23 PM. |

With the pump off you can look thru the hole at the eccentric and make sure it's there, and attached properly.
Check for dry rotted lines between the tank and the pump. Make sure all the clamps are tight too. I've seen them not suck fuel and not leak either. If they're old, replace them. The old stuff isn't made for today's fuel and will eventually fail. Something stuck in the fuel line itself may allow air to pass back to tank, but plug again from the tank forward. It's possible. Like a bunch of rust flakes at the bottom. Or globs of thickened crap. If you've never had the tank out, it wouldn't be a bad idea to pull it and inspect it. Yank the sock off while you're at it. Pop the sending unit and look in there, shake it around, see if there's crap in there. Bet there is. If there's a question over the vapor line, plug it. It's possible to get multiple DOA/out of box failures on the pumps, Paul Spotts just went thru this. Think it took him several before he got one that worked. The Carters were the ones failing, and he was going to try an airtex I believe. Pretty sure he picked up a NAPA one. .

Try this.... blow air (low Psi)from fuel pump inlet hose back to the tank....(remove fill cap)
see if fuel / air is leaking from a cracked or pin hole in the steel line......If you find a leak,,,, your sucking air into the line. Hope this helps. |

Spotts commented that he ended up with a Delphi pump, and it holds a steady 7psi at idle.
