Default rare? wiw

stumbled across an odd one. 1972 LeMans 455 D port convertible with T41 and GT options. orig driveline, hasn't rolled the odo and is a 3 owner car in the same town sold new in. Needs some body work, lower quarters and fender patches, valence, carpet and tidy up inside and new top. Leaks from everywhere underneath but runs strong. Not many GT ragtops were made if I recall correctly.

WOW - what a cool (and EXCEEDINGLY rare) '72 LeMans GT!

I'm gonna check my records to see if there is a count of '72 Y-code LeMans (and or LeMans GT) 'verts.

Dayum - I knew that GT 'vert would be rare, but just how rare - one of two!

That's right, exactly two L75 '72 GT 'verts were assembled. A total of 47 '72 GT's 'verts were assembled with the T41 option, but unfortunately I have no record if any of the 47 were L75 cars.

That one is defeinitely worth saving, bbh.

Sorry, been busy and didn't get any more updates on my feed after the first one. It's metallic gold and brown interior, the stripes black.

If thats the case I know where the other one is. A friend of mine passed away about 5 years ago & he had an original 72 455 conv. & he swapped in an HO engine from a 71 , but it's in Elkhart IN now. He sold it , rather then his widow sold it to one of his students as he was an auto shop teacher fro 30+ years in Elkhart IN.

That rare 'vert needs to be bought and preserved!

Are you considering purchasing it, BBH?

No worries - wasn't sure if this other one was a GT too. He implied it was the other one but made no mention of GT.

The 72 that Steve put a 455 HO engine in started out as a LeMans GT as it had the correct front bumper for a GTO so it had the GT options when Steve put the 455 HO in it. It started out as a 350 4 bbl car with the GT stripes on it before he repainted it. It had the typical rust on it & everything that was needed got it . The car instead of having a regular 71-2 rear spoiler on it has a Buick rear spoiler on it. It looks OK but I tried to get him to put the correct spoiler on it for years, well at least until he pasted away. Now a local kid has it in Elkhart IN. & trys to tell those who don't know that it's a real 72 GTO vert. I tried to explain it to him once but all he did was get mad at me for telling him it wasn't a real GTO. I even showed him a pic of the car before it was redone & showed him the correct spoiler for it, at least the 71 spoiler & that if it were correct it should have the duck tail spoiler on it & he said I was nuts that he knew better then me that it was real. I just walked away & said what ever you want to think but it's not a GTO.

So it wasn't a 455 GT originally?

yeah, now it gets even more confusing!

FWIW, "started out as a LeMans GT as it had the correct front bumper for a GTO so it had the GT options" is not true - the T41 nose doesn't a LeMans GT make.

Indeed!

LeMans GTs could be ordered with the so-called T41 Endura Appearance Option, but standard equipment was a chromed front bumper.

Witness the attachment below for '72 LeMans GT equipment.
