71-72 convertible questions
I have a few questions regarding the Rally II wheels that were available on Lemans convertibles from 1971 - 1972.
In general, I think the GTOs coupes and hardtops came with 14x7s and the 15x7 wheels were an option. I think the Lemans came with 14x6 wheels. A friend told me he thought that you couldn't order a 15" wheel on a convertible because of differences in the rear wheel well. I have a 72 Lemans Sport with a 455HO 4-spd. It was missing the original wheels when I bought it. Would it have come with 14x6 or 14x7 Rally IIs. I have set aside a set of KRs for this car. Were the 15x7s even an option on this car? Thanks, Mike |

1971
-14x6 steel wheels were std on '71 V8 T-37 and LeMans. 6 cyl T-37s received 14 x 5.5 steel wheels, standard. -14x6 rally II were std on GT-37's, either code JT or KU, depending on time of the production year. No JT coded rallyII wheels were stamped after the Fall '70 strike, when they ran out, they 14x6 rallyII's were optional on all '71 Abody 2doors and 4 doors. -14x7 Honeycombs were optional. -14x7 steel wheels and 14x7 rallyII's were NOT available on any '71 Pontiac A body. -15x7 Rally II code KR were optional beginning around the first of the year on '71 GTO hardtops. Possibly on LeMans Sport hardtops. GTO converts and LeMans Sport converts could not be optioned with the 15" wheels,. 1972 model year. -14x6 steel wheels were standard. 14x6 rallyII's code KT were optional. -14x7 rally II's , code KS were std on the '72 LeMans GT and optional on '72 LeMans with the GTO package. -am not sure of the option code, but I believe 14x7 rally II code KS were optional on all 2D37 series '72 LeMans. -14x7 steel wheels were standard on the '72 GTO. -14x7 Honeycombs were avail on all '72 LeMans 2 doors,4doors, and Lux LeMans. -15x7 Rally II, code KR, were avail through several handling packages on '72 Pontiac 2 door A body's, except the Lux LeMans. Two of those option pkgs where the 15x7 KRs and G60x15's could be additionally optioned included: ---WW4 package on 2 door LeMans Coupe and Hardtop (not avail on Lux LeMans) ---WW5 package on '72 GTO Coupe and GTO Hardtop -'72 LeMans Sport Converts were not avail with any 15" steel wheel, that did not stop a few dealers from swapping them on, once the Converts were at their dealerships. -Am not acquainted with 15x7 Honeycombs factory installed on any '72 LeMans. if any anyone has copy of a '72 Pontiac A-body build sheet with 15x7 Honeycombs, would love to see it. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the information. Was this documentation obtained from GM, or is it from experience?
Many years ago I took apart a Lucy Blue 71 GTO with the D-port 455 and automatic. I am pretty sure it had a complete set of KN wheels installed. I also believe the car was a fairly early vehicle, built around September or October of 1971. I still have a 3.07 limited slip 12-bolt rear I think came from that car, but I don't have the date handy. So unless my 72 HO convertible had the optional 14x7 wheel, it would have come with 14x6 wheels. I've also seen a number of 72 Lemans with 14x7 honeycombs, but never 15x7s. Thanks, Mike Last edited by poncho-mike; 07-13-2016 at 10:43 PM. |

A friend who is now gone had a 71 Judge Canyon Copper with the 455 HO 4 spd. & a bench seat his car had drum brakes & 15X7 honeycombs , they were original as he bought the car from a factory rep. back in 76. This was a car that was raced from the time is was new & Bruce bought it with the engine out of it as it had spun a rod. But this was the way it came from the factory. I think because of the weight of the car it was running B-stock. ??

i realize what it is..it IS the wheel house, they are flat on the top for the convert irons when folded down...i could see a rub or bottom out issue...never thought about it..but i can see it...

Thanks Lloyd! do you happen to have invoice copies of any '72 WW5 builds with Honeycombs? I can't remember coming across any 15" HC's '71's or '72's in all of my invoice copies and buildsheet copies and my copies of '72.sales literature is thinner than what I have for '71's
Mike, in putting the wheel list together, just took an early interest in what came on '71's and 72's, been fortunate, like yourself to own quite a few. Couple that with getting to spend over a decade hitting monster boneyards down to country yards. dealing with a ton of restores and enthusiasts Also have a lot of factory paperwork, copies of some but not all sales bulletins. Bound TSB's, the '71 asm man has also been very helpful. Most would say, '71's and '72's have been my Pontiac focus, since I was a young fellow, college age. On the KN's, or KR's they def weren't production car avail early on, and never from the factory on a convert due to perceived clearance issues with the tops of the inner wheel houses. The 455 Dport car easily could have been asm on a "caught in the strike" body, say a 09A or 09B Lakewood body built car, as the body's would have set at the plant till Lakewood plant fired back up the 3rd week of January. Believe PY member "Birds & Goats" has the earliest built '71 A body documented with 15" wheels. The box from the '71 assembly manual shows a date in mid Jan as the 15" wheel avail date, but "Birds & Goats" Pontiac Judge build predates that by a week or so. In Dec of '70 and Jan '71, there was a lot going on at some plants (Pontiac, Fremont), and nothing (Norwood, Lakewood) or not so much at others. as further example, the Framingham plant. that particular plant was so low volume, there are some extremely large date gaps when it comes to certain component parts on cars out of that plant. Hope this helps, trying not to ramble

Here are a few, Roger. Some are non-WW5 cars, though.

Thanks Lloyd for posting those, I should have looked for your WW5 thread... and saved you the trouble of digging these sheets out. Have looked over a ton of '72's over the years, and just can't remember any with 15x7 HC's
Anyone have an invoice copy or original buildsheet for: - a '71 LeMans Sport hardtop with factory installed 15" wheels (KN/KR rally II's) - a '71 GTO with factory installed 15" steel wheels (AX) OR 15" honeycombs.

Found this . . .
Quite a few '71 G60 tire cars, but this is the only one I found with Honeys.
