Default 1970 Power Steering Pumps

Well, the power steering pump on the '70 Formula is leaking pretty badly now. We rebuilt it last summer (or was it the summer before...hmm) thinking it needed new seals, but it appears it may be one of the rear fittings, either the welded on nut for the high pressure line, or the integral tube with crack at the base. Fluid is definitely coming from one or the other. Not to mention, it acts like it still has air the the system as it squeals when turning from a slow roll or from a stop, and bucks/kicks back as well. We have bled it 'til the cows come home and never any improvement.

Has anyone used a new (not reman.) pump from Lares Corp.? I see their pump #12055 is for a '70 Firebird V8 application and has the correct oval reservoir neck. It's $132.99 from Rock Auto + shipping. Anyone have any experience with one of these?

It appears from the picture on Lares' website that connections in the back for the pump are reversed...I guess it's not an exact fit!

Rock auto has been stepping up to the plate more and more recently. I ordered one last year and got it in 3 days and was correct looking, return line was slightly different. Worked well.

FBruce, Did you get one for a '70 Firebird?

Thanks! Dennis

Dennis, Remember that is a 1 year only pump for the 1970...and only for the Firebird V8
First way to tell is the neck of the reservoir is much shorter that the common oval pontiac pump...
Also has 2 very long studs coming out of the back for mounting...Yes the entire bracket and mounting system is 1 year only and Firebird only as well...
The rear "nut" is for the hose to attach to is removable and has o-rings on it...That is the only way that could leak...
As far as the return pipe, yes...maybe cracked but could be tig welded if so...
Also the double flare on the hose end may have been tightened so many times it is not getting a good seal any more. Have to hold that Rear NUT with a wrench while tightening the hose...Common area to leak...
Lots going on there to make it a 1 application only reservoir. The 2 long mounting studs and the short neck...Oh and shorter cap with level stick on it...
Pumps are the same...
I can text you pics later if needed...I have mine on the bench.....as usual...

Hey Ross! Yes, I'd appreciate some pics! Hopefully we can fix the original pump/reservoir. It's time to pull again to really see what's up with it. One-off pieces sure do come with challenges. Thanks!

Hi Im restoring my dad's 70 formula and gathering parts. I'm not sure if my pump stock.but if it's is great. If I where you I would have 2 . Your original and a good repop one. Then there is no rush rebuilding your original 1. That's just my thought process. I'm following. Oh how you tell if one had an original power steering pump

Ramairnacho, I have the original PS pump on the Formula now. I can see the Rock Auto pump isn't correct at all, but probably could 'fit' and work, but I'm certainly not going that route. The stock original F-bird PS pumps have a shorter reservoir neck that the ones used on A & B bodies and specific mounting studs, brackets, and pulley. Thanks to the great pictures RamAirBirds and HFR sent me of the front and back sides. I'm learning a lot about all the one-off-ness of 1970 Birds.

Ramairnacho, That's for '71-up Firebirds.

1970 alt rear bracket and the front PS and rear PS are same as other Pontiacs from 67-70 as I recall.
While there is many weird 1 off things on this transitional year car, its not rocket science.
Guess ill have to make a video..
a 2bbl 350 bird with AC will have same hardware as a RA3 car with AC.

The '70 A-body has the 'hooded' alternator bracket that wrapped over the alternator when equipped with PS (a real pita to R& R). I added a few pics to show the difference. I'm not sure what B-bodies got myself.
