Default Saw a GTO this afternoon...

...and it wasn't a Pontiac!
I'm building a house in a pretty affluent area that is also a popular place to cruise to on a nice day. Sitting on the deck for a while can be a bit like watching a moving car show go by. Lots of classics, including some nice Pontiacs, saw a nice '68 Firebird convertible yesterday and a '69 Custom S convertible today. Lots of high end imports, too, as it's close to Lime Rock Park.
Well, I'm sitting out this afternoon and something catches my eye in the distance- a bright red vintage Ferrari. The driver opens it up as he drives past- the 12 cylinder stumbles a bit as it blows out the cobwebs from sitting too long before it screams up to a rev range us Pontiac guys will never see. It was an early '60s 250 GTO. The car that Pontiac lifted the name from... and one of the most valuable cars on Earth! I explain to my wife what it was after it passed, and she says "why didn't you take a picture?!" Prolly would have been a good idea!

Cool! Never seen a real GTO in person, but I have a scale model of one.
There's a guy in my area who owns a 250swb (short wheelbase) Ferrari. Not quite in the same same price stratosphere as the GTO but still worth many millions, and he does drive it on the street.

Craig McCaw has one I was able to examine up close - the caretaker was running it around - smoked pretty good too.

Only familiar with the 1960s Road & Track (Car & Driver?) article on the Ferrari GTO. Great photos in the artical.

The 250 GTO is one of the most beautiful cars in the world.

It's a pretty car, but I think the 275 GTB is prettier. When I first saw this 250 GTO off in the distance I thought it was a 275, as I know there is one in town, but as it approached it quickly became fairly obvious that it wasn't just a "common" 275 GTB.

BTW, forgot to mention another rare sighting (at least in this area) from yesterday- a 1969 Beaumont!

Here's a picture for those not familiar-
There are a few different variations on the body work, but the one I saw yesterday looked like this. Even had a number on the door, but I was focusing so much on the rest of the car that I couldn't tell you what number was on it!

The 250 GTO currently holds the record for the most expensive automobile after one sold for $70 MILLION in 2018. Several others have changed hands in the neighborhood of $50 million.

There are several convincing clones in our area. One is built on a Z car with a BMW engine and sounds pretty good.
The other is built on a garden variety 7 figure Ferrari, has the 12 and is rather legit looking
Then there is the former Brunkorst GTO that lived a couple miles North of me in the 80's.
This is the car that Bob Bonduant parked a Cobra on top of at Road America many years ago.
Talk about a bad day!

I also have a Ferrari 250 GTO here at my house..... Burago 18th scale.

I couldn't afford the big one. LOL And yes, it is a gorgeous car. Hey, I looked for years to find one and this past Fall I picked it up for 15.00 at our local flea market. A guy offered me 50 bucks for it just after I bought it and I said no. He said he owned a real one and needed mine for his desk. I said the price just went to 1000.00 if you need it that bad. I still have it. Screw the money, you can't spend the car.

I agree that is a beautiful car. It just screams speed!!

You mentioned the 275. I've posted this before, so forgive me if you've seen it. A customer of mine sold this 275GTB several years ago. I maintain the car he replaced it with.

The 275 is gorgeous. I see a lot of C2 Corvette in it.

Man, all we got here is a crappy Huracan that drives by every once in a while.

Lime Rock is about a 2.5 hour drive for me and the wife, but we enjoy going to Ferrari day when ever they hold it. Staying in Falls Village at the While Hollow Farm inn lends itself nicely to seeing all the cars who drive to the track, drive home from the track. I wish I could afford that kind of racing!
