Heater hose nipple on head
Can it be replaced with the head on the car easily ? Mine is corroded so much that I can't get a good seal with the hose/clamp. Any tricks to getting the old one out ?

I usually puncture them with a big screwdriver near the head surface and pry it out.
You can also clamp a big pair of Vise Grips or Channelocks onto the nipple part and try to lever it out. Just do whatever works. Tap the new one in place using a large deep socket about the same size as the OD of the fitting.

If it's the earler cast steel one your not gonna pucture that one all too dam easy to pry it out.
I use a big chisle with it tip rolled over a bit to get it rocking some and than a big ass Vice grip to get it spinning some and then start to pry it out.

I use a 24" or longer pipe wrench and just start twisting. While it is smooth and pressed in, the twisting motion along with a slight pulling will get the jog done. Think about it as a champagne bottle cork. Trying to pull straight out doesn't work very well, but add a little twisting and the cork will start moving.

Is OE available? I think it is important to use one that has a restrictor so the coolant flow does not overpressure the heater core like the pre-'65 setups did.
I believe the replacements have a spiral thingy to accomplish the restriction.

Owners of '64 and earlier cars/engines don't have to deal with the heater hose fitting in the head.
It's screwed into the intake manifold water crossover. This can be done with '65 and later engines too.

Yea, you want to get one with the thermal coil restrictor in it!
I got stuck with a issue of yours late one Sunday nite and needed the car for work in the morning, but had no new one on hand, but I did have a set of heads on the shelf that had the more sturdy type in it. I got it out without beating it up , slapped some silicone sealer on it and was good to go in 15 minutes!

Don't ask me how I know this, but if you use one of two part cooling system flush kits ( Dupont acid and neutralizer ) that new type rubber restrictor goes By By!
