Default a couple of 69 questions

could a 69 have hood pins factory installed? If so, what is the option code? Also, is the remote mirror from a 69 gto and a 69 Boneville the same?If originality is not a concern, what is the best appearing and most functional way to get mirrors on both doors? Are there any right-side mirrors that match the left-side remote? Thanks in advance for any assistance.

No '69s had hood pins from the factory. They did come on the GT-37 which came out in mid-1970 model year.
Not real sure if '69 A-body and Bonneville remote mirrors are the same... and I have one of each. I suspect that they are the same though. I do know that the A-body remotes are the same as Grand Prix.

I don't know if it's original, but my 1969 Bonneville has a remote on the driver side and a correct standard mirror on the passenger side. They're obviously not the same but it doesn't look bad either. There was no passenger side mirror that matched the remote.

Gaotless, thanks for the reply. It looks like I'll have to get out the wire-feed as someboby once upon a time installed hood pins in my hood.If it would have been original,I might have left it,but you made my decision easy as I never really cared too much for them anyway.

Default Passenger remote mirror

From what I can tell, the optional passenger side mirror was not available as a remote. If you had a remote drivers mirror and ordered a passenger mirror they did not quite match.

I have a NOS passenger side remote mirror in a box that matches the drivers side mirrors exactly however I understand that it is not correct for the GTO. I think it is for a Monte Carlo or Buick or something.

I've decided to go with sport mirrors on mine and will be selling it.

I need to pull it out of the attic. It is mint and NOS in a tattered up GM box. I'll post some pics soon. I'm in between trips now and I'll see if I can do it when I'm back for a day otherwise it will be next week.

$185 is what I need to get for it.

I don't believe remote passenger mirrors were ever an option available on the GTO, at least in '69. The passenger side mirrors just looked like non-remotes and would not match if you had a remote on the drivers door. I think that David in Alabama was in this situation before he switched the mirrors out on his '69.

Default remote mirror

Marauder, thanks for all your help.If the mirror matches the one I already have, consider it sold.I'll wait til you post pics.If you like, you can e-mail me at ctwurz71@msn.com.I'm not too concerned about originality, but more about safety as I'm building my car as a somewhat daily driver.(My job requires about 40,000 miles a year).I think it would be kind of cool to have matching remote mirrors, even if it's not original. Thanks again.

Thomas Bonsall's book titled, GTO A source book, claims that in 1969 the dealer could put on what he refers to as "hood retainers". Bonsall says they are double locking to keep the hood secure with stainless steel posts. I recall seeing photos of a 69 RAIV auto trans Judge with these back in the early 1980's. They were locking with a key so there was no clip and cable hanging from the grill of the car.

69 remote mirror was same on all non vent window cars. On cars equipped with vent windows (A-body: wagons, all 4 doors and 2 dr post) a similar looking mirror was used but it is angled different, mounts like a non remote mirror (no studs) and the remote control is the older style (round)

I was refering to the drivers side for 69. Your car is a 68 so it has the round mirrors.

In 69 no factory right hand mirror was available but dealers often mounted the non remote version (it is reversable) on the right side of the car.

yeah I'm new to the GTO game so i have a lot to learn still..

another question (sorry to interfere in this post by the way) if I wanted to setup a couple of sports mirrors on the '68 with a remote controllable driver side would I still be able to use the same setup in the door as I have now (example)
or would I end up with a remote control like the Chevelles and Camaro's have? (example)

thanks,

From what I see on a set of sport mirrors in my basement you will be able to use your original control housing on the door panel. But I do not know if the control knob mounting system varied over the years.

Yes it did, John, but I modified mine on the H/T by removing the complete mounting assembly off my std '69 GTO chrome remote mirror and swapping it on the sport mirror..Be careful prying those little ears to remove it as it's pot metal and breaks off easily...

I only have an old scan of my H/T with them...I was lucky that the angle of bases
matched perfectly..Don't remember which car I got them from as this was over 25 yrs ago...

Hmmm...upload of image failed..Wasn't this fixed a few days ago???

Here's a link to it on Ultimate GTO site:
