Swapping a 78 400 in place of an old tired 301 Turbo in a 81 TA. All the head holes are identical. Went to put alternator/power steering bracket on and holes don't line up! Got to thinking it must be the deck heogth difference as one braket is on the head and the other the water pump/block.

Went junk yard shopping and found 1 non 301 car(77 GP) to rob brackets. Then 81 alternator is too big. I think in the shop manual some had a 15 SI case! Now get a new alternator! The shop manual mentioned some choke relay circuit that was needed to turn off the triode in the 15 SI, any ideas? This car has a butcher wiring harness when they took out the computer and all asociated circuits.

What a pain for a simple swap.

the computer harness shouldn't affect the regular harness[lights, alt, guages ect]. the circuit in question is turned off by the electric choke i believe, if i remember correctly there is a oil pressure switch that does this. you probably have a 100 amp alt on the t/a and the g/p probably had a 65 or 70 amp. mike

I've done the T301 to 400 swap. In my case, I custom fitted the AC and PS/ALT brackets with a little cutting and welding. Not a big deal actually, and when painted, no-one has noticed any difference. The computer wiring harness is for the turbo only and removes as one piece through the firewall hole. You won't need the computer either.
You may need a different lower pully to hook up the A/C compressor, new motor mounts and a bracket for the kickdown cable. (if you want... )
Keep the carb, '81s came with 800cfm quadrajets.
Doesn't hurt to check fan clutch also. When hot check for play by wiggling fan blades. If any, replace with heavy or severe duty model.

Thanks.

This car had been butchered in the wiring by previous owner(s). Computer harness long gone. Even the electric trunk release was cut out as was the passenger side glovebox and courtesy light harness. Had a Holley 780 on the Turbo too. I'd like to hunt up the light blue choke wire to use an electric choke but not sure where it comes out.

I thought about cutting and welding existing bracket but I don't have a welder easily accessible for when the car is down so going with the older brackets.
