I would like a second opinion. My machinist recommeds I go with 10 degree valve locks and retainers. He claims they are stronger and less prone to wear. They seem to me to be at least double in price. I have never seen a 7 degree fail myself, but this is the first engine I have built for performance and use. The last thing I want to see happen is a valve dancing around in the cylinder of my engine!

Top end:
1. 068 pontiac cam w/supplied lifters
2. 2.11/1.77 SS valves
3. Comp cams 995-16 springs
4. 1.60 ratio rollers
5. Stock spring hats
6. 1970 #13 heads
7. Stock type replacement pushrods

What do you think? Do I need them?

Why spend the money for locks and keepers ect... When the factory is good for 450-500hp motors.

Never mind, you already have double springs (should have read the post more clearly)

No need for 10-degree locks for your combo. Stick with the factory locks and retainers. I would recommend however, going with a double spring valvespring. Should you have valve spring failure (which is rare) you don't run the risk of ruing the engine, as it is even more rare that the inner and outer spring would fail together.

Thanks Guys,
I didn't think I was too radical in the valve train department to warrant them but like I said I haven't built for performance before. Seeing how I should only see 400HP/460LBS I will stick to stock retainers and locks per your recommendations. Any money I can save will be donated to another area of the car.
