Default Sonic Drive In Commercial - 1/2 Car 1/2 Pickup?

Been looking at the latest Sonic Drive In fast food commercial and wondering WTF is that 1/2 Car 1/2 Truck El Camino/Ranchero looking vehicle used in the commercial? I am usually pretty good at recognizing what the year make and model is of a custom car originally, but this one has got me stumped. For all I know this could be a photoshop. But my guess is it started out as a '68 - '72 Chevy ElCamino. Just curious what you guys think this vehicle started out as originally......make, model and year(s). Also note scoops on the hood in commercial video beginning at 0:01.

I imagine that it's one of those deals where they didn't want to pay GM, so they "disguised" the car somewhat.

I don't know what the deal is between automakers and the film industry, but I'm sure we've all seen cars on the screen without any badging or emblems. And I'm sure that money is the reason.

The Dukes of Hazzard comes to mind. No where in the series do you see any badges or emblems on any of the vehicles.

Thanks for posting this John - I've been wondering about the car as well.

Methinks that the hood scoops appear to be from a '68-'69 hood Chevelle SS / Elco, but the "bed" area looks like a '78-up ElCo.

Dunno?

I like how he calls it "part sedan".

Each and every Sonic commercial somehow hits a new low with me and everyone I have ever asked about it. Who in the hell are these commercials supposed to appeal to? Sonic has always been a friend to the classic car hobby and a great place to cruise into, but the ads are so beyond stupid that I haven't been to one in several years.

The entire PR Department at Sonic should be fired and forced to spend eternity on a desert island with those two morons.

That looks like a George Barris creation.

I like the Sonic commercials. The are usually lighthearted, and entertaining. The commercials I hate are the Viagra commercials, it makes is sound like a majority of the male population has ED, and it always a woman advertising for it. Their PR dept. should be the ones fired.

I'm always puzzled that I see so many commercials for them (at least one per break), when there's only one Sonic that I know of within 100 miles of my house. (A google search just revealed there are 9. Still not very many.)

Not a great use of ad dollars, but still not as bad as "Farmer's Only.com" Why do they show so many of these ads in the Los Angeles area?

Default Hines 57 Elco

Looks like a 1969 El Camino chassis and cab with 79 Elco front clip and a 1996 or 97 Caprice wagon side panels with caprice tail lamps and caprice tail gate.

Roof line behind the door is not Camino looking. Fudged it up in my opinion.
kinda fugly.

FWIW it's a g-body El Camino that's been retro styled. The B-pillar glass has been filled and mid 60's tail lights and bumper styling added. Hood looks to have 60's SS humps. I can't quite place the tail lights but it will come to me. I would say I'd like to see the grille, but I really wouldn't, this car just doesn't work for me. No offense to hard work of those who built it.
Really hoping it's not another gas monkey speciall....
