How freely does your auto floor shifter move?
Mine seems pretty tight.

The one in my '69 moves quite freely but without any sloppy feel to it.

The shifter in my 70 moves very easily....maybe your cable is gummed up?

I have heard that a poor chassis ground can cause your cable to be the ground.
Heating up and melting causing the stiffness ?? read that somewhere... |

The shifter in my 68 bird was very stiff. I removed it and cleaned the years of grime off and relub'd it. Works very easy now. Didn't do anything to the cable.

Mine is very smooth, without being sloppy. I did clean it and relubed, but thats all.

I'm having the same issue with my 72 GP. As others have already said. I'm confident as soon as you remove it / clean it/ and grease it the problem will go away.

Installed a new cable on my 70 GTO and the shifter and trans are good to go. Shifter is way more firm than I would like, but it is smooth. I may try and press some lube in it.

My floor shifter cable in my 72 was frayed and the rubber boot waS WORN
from age. Picked up this exact re-pop cable off a flea-bay vendor. Looks correct and works good! http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...IF%3AUS%3A1123
