OK, I believe that I already know that the tranny is shot, but.... esterday I started my T/A, and heard a pretty loud whining sound. I look under the car, and it seems to be coming from the tranny. I get back in, and put the car in gear. When I moved the shifter from park, to reverse, the sound went away. I then stepped on the gas, and the car didnt move, and smoke came out from underneath the car, from the transmission. I of coarse turned off the car at that point. I checked the fluid, and it is full, and also red, not burned looking. Anybody know what might have happened? Possibly the torque converter? The Pump? Thanks for any input.

If you checked the fluid with the motor off that would read full if you were 2 qts.low.The trans.fluid should be checked with the eng.running & in park.Likely that line developped a leak near exhaust(causing smoke)possible the trans.is salvagable.

good luck!

Years ago I had a '70 Fairlane that had a similar promblem as yours. It was a bad torque converter seal (tranny front seal), fluid passing by the seal under pressure caused the whinning noise and then dripped out the drain of the the dust cover onto the exhaust crossover resulting in a smoke screen for anyone behind me! And if your trans is a quart low on fluid the trans operation will be sluggish or non operational. The level must be checked with the engine running and trans in neutral, otherwise as STripleduce posted, the level will show full or overfilled. Also do not add more than a quart at first and see if it will go into gear. If it does, do not add anymore until the oil is hot and recheck level and service as needed. If it does not go into gear there probably is a hard part promblem, but you may try up to one more quart of fluid to be sure. I know with my current TH350 Firebird if it is almost one quart low the first gear engagement and shifts are sluggish. Hope this helps and good luck. DanC
