I was under the Safari this afternoon. I know the car has a Posi, but the rearend looks almost like a Ford 9". It dosen't have the rear bolted pumpkina that I am used to seeing. It has a much larger solid pumpkin. Is that the way they are supposed to be?

Give me a thumbs up, tell me "Nice Car!", but for god's sake, don't call it an Impala.

The Pontiac is actually stronger!
You don't snap the five Pinion bolts like Fords do!
Also if it indeed has a Posi it will have a Tag on the housing where one of the nuts that hold it on are. Usually on the side.

Usually I'm found working on my Pontiac. If you want to find me Look for the white picket fence and all the old Pontiacs parked outside. And the half dissembled engine sprawled all over the driveway!

Tell me the number on the pumkin, like 8 or 7 or something and I can tell you the ratio, the end of the axles also have a color code that tell you the ratio.

yellow and green is a 3.08 and it will have a "0"
on the differential

green and white is a 3.42, and it will have an "8"
on the differential

Hope this helps

61man, my '63 Catalina has the 2.69 open rear and I would like a little more gear. Can I just pull the chunk and put in a 3.23\3.42 posi or is there more to it than that?

Yes just change the chunk and you are ready to go.If you change to a posi, use two cans of the Gm additive you can use an Olds or pontiac chunk from 59-64

Its gotta be the 3.42. This thing screams at 50mph. I would have figured it had more than that.

61 Man, Is it correct that if there are two colors on the axle end it is a posi and if only one color, it is non-posi? What colors would be on a 64 421 car that was posi and had 3.42 or 3.64
gears? (The car is a 2+2 convertible car automatic tranny that has 421 flags. I assume all 2+2's were 421 but I'm not sure. Are the colors on both axles? Thanks!

Yep, you are right 2 colors for a posi, one for a non posi, a 3.42 non posi should be white only, the posi is green/white, I don't have a color listing for the other one in my book
