Default OHC 421 1 of 1

Dont know if this is good here or better for the lobby. Just wanted to see it get good exposure for some of the newbe's that may never have known about this type of cool stuff from PMD. Thinking more newbe's would come in the street section than the lobby?
Here's one of the cool motors that should have been in production. Would have been cool to see many different motors later evolve from this. Like the RAIV's, SD's & the V's. Maybe even the M/T Hemi's

I saw it on the TAC board for sale today with no price.
It would be cool to have a 64' GTO with this in it at car shows just for the "Wow Factor".

65black,
No, I just saw it & brought it here to show. To bad the pics are to small of the article to read. I remember reading it yeeeeears ago but I'm way older & memory is...a..... huh what were we talking about? I'm sure one of the old geezers with less Alzheimer's will chime in with the specs or at least a readable size of the article

Here ya go Kieth. I thought I put it in the post, but like I said my memory.......

Ya just another "If only"
Like the Hemi in 70' or the V's if only all that cool stuff made it to the production line.
Like I said if it were mine, this motor would be in a 64' GTO at shows for everyone to see. No matter if it was a trailer queen with a mile or two a year on it or not. It tells a better story in a working state than it would just kept away private & hidden.

research how the current owner came about with this and draw your own conclusion.

Nice!

I always love to see how far those engineering teams were pushing back then. How's that for the archaic Pontiac v8?

Wonder if that's a cam on bucket or a follower arrangement - doesn't matter; I'll never have a set

Hey! My pushrods and rockers weigh zero grams!

I think the porshe 928 came out in 78 with a single ohc v8. My boss was looking at one for his 924, I pushed for the Nissan 4.5 dohc v8, but he went with the ls-1. Cool head designs don't always add up to the most power per dollar I guess.

Guys are pushing the design of the old Indian pretty far now and days. They changed the valve angle on more than one set of heads, and the cast a new intake for at least one, they have timing belt out. Hmmm...... Yea, like I can affor to play! Nice to dream though!

I like what at least one guy did with building spacers and cutting for smaller mains; that, my massive 73lbs crank, and my intake for megasquirt 3 are where my Pontiac pushing thoughts are at right now.

These guys are getting massive flow outta the conventional cam arrangement Pontiac, and the engineers for pmd went after port changes while leaving the cam down in the valley - I'm guessing they're not having to many qualms about the valve train - I don't hear much, so maybe the is one where the rewards aren't worth the cost of tooling.

An OHC injun is certainly a cool sight though!

Thanks for the pics that inspire happy thoughts.

4.6 L Lincoln V8, Ford truck show the OHC8 is worthy or Production & Reliability.

Shall we rally around an aftermarket PMD OHC V8 hi-flow Head & Cam train?

If I had any cash, I'd rally around an aftermarket PMD DOHC v8.
Q; What lobe separation ya running?
A; All of them!

Is that out of Mac Mckellar's car?

Here's an article from the Hot Rod article:

421 SOHC

Buick and Olds had similar prototype engines.

Olds had 4-valve heads with pushrods, and 4-valve heads with overhead cams.

Buick had turbocharged 425s and others I don't remember at the moment.

I don't doubt that Chevy had interesting prototypes, too.

Chrysler had ball-stud Hemis.

Cadillac had an OHC V-12 in '63 or thereabouts. Called it the V-Future engine. 6-cylinder distributor on the front of each camshaft. Couldn't get any power out of it due to ****ty intake manifolding--massive mixture distribution problems.

Hot Rod Magazine featured many of these engines back in the 60's or 70's.

awesome! imagine if GM didnt throw in the towel on engine R and D after the early 70s--imagine how far the pontiac V8 would have come in 40 years! cadillac back in the late 60s also had a V16 in the works which was supposed to be showcased in the new 1967 eldorado...

You know what one of the biggest factors was in killing those engines was Chrysler. Read, "We Were The RAMCHARGERS". They "phony'ed up" a DOHC Hemi and showed it to NASCAR and said that it was ready for production and NASCAR had a kanipshin. They freaked at the direction the Big Three were headed and put a kibosh on these types of engines. The final straw was EPA emissions regulations. All of the research money went to meeting emissions standards and went away from performance. The funny thing was they didn't see that these engines were as much the answer as anything else. Interesting time...

Mac's engine had a "one of a kind" (single base air gap) Tri-Power set-up.

The air gap base is visible in the picture posted.

Apparently they thought that the carbs needed bore air flow under them.
