Default Need a torque converter

I’m going to be rebuilding a donor TH 350 that I picked up for my low budget 1968 400 refresh in my ‘67 LeMans. I’m more than likely going with an 068 (but still wondering about the Crower 60916), stock 15 heads, stock Pontiac 1971 four barrel manifold & 750 Quadrajet. I’ll be running a 3:23 rear gear & since the transmission didn’t come with a converter I need to buy something. What’s a good converter if I’m looking for something maybe a little over stock like the rest of the build? The car is a cruiser that might see the track once or twice for tuning. I know that I can pick up a stock replacement converter but with today’s quality issues I even worry about that! So what are some good choices for this kind of build?

I would call Tri-Shield Performance and see what they could build for your combo. I don't think I'd recommend their tight 9" for this application, but they build a quality converter.

I've had a tight 9" from them that drove really well. Very positive, felt nearly stock, until you put your foot into it. I now have one of their triple disc 4l80e converters and it's just as good.

I'm sure they could build you something that would be both suitable for your build while also providing a bit of a performance improvement over a stock replacement.

For that type of build and intended purpose a Hughes GM25 would do decent and not break the bank.

TSP is fantastic & I remember Jim very well from my Buick days but I’m not sure if this build requires an $800 converter? I’m not saying no but I’m also doing a budget type of build with this cruiser….

Is Tri Shield still I’m business? My cousin tried to call him a few months ago and said the number is no longer in service.

Cliff should be able to advise as he’s a vendor

For anyone that is unaware, Cliff Ruggles is a dealer of sorts for Tri-shield convertors. If you want it speced, I'm sure Cliff has a reccomendation, and is able to get product from Tri-shield.

There may be an off the shelf convertor that would suit the OP's needs, Cliff would probably know if a custom convertor was needed for a mild build, or not.

I have a similar torque converter selection to make, so I'm wondering if a 2500 stall is necessary for a street cruiser, or is 2000 adequate? Hughes make a GM20, too.

I had a GM20 behind my stockish 400 in my 69 bird- ran great with that converter!

This particular engine/drivetrain/vehicle combination certainly doesn't need a custom build 9.5" converter. I'd look at other options and save some money. Although I'm not overly impressed with the Hugh's units something built from a full size core with a touch more torque multiplication than a stock unit certainly makes more sense here.....IMHO....
