Default 041 Roller Cam

Anyone running one of these? "Butler Exclusive Pontiac Ram Air IV "041" Hydraulic Roller Retrofit Camshaft, 287/296 232/241, .507/.541 HR113" Just looking for some feedback. Trying to narrow some choices down.

Not wanting to rain on your parade...but...those cams have only been out for a short amount of time. Not sure if you'll get your question answered...........

I'm kind of surprised that Butler hasn't put together a few combos by now and put them on his dyno to advertise these camshafts that he basically brought to the market.

I mean we already know what the flat tappet version will do in a 455, that's been done to death for 40 years. Would the roller be any better or show something on the dyno we can't see on the cam card that warrants the extra expense? Personally I'd like to see more lift with the roller version but....I'd also like to see more duration too.

a smidge bigger and you are basically old faithful, a smidge smaller and you have stump puller. my guess is that butler is trying to fit into a narrow window here with a marketing idea that has a niche in the narrow window between those two competing products.

Previous post by OP....

"So to make a long story short, I’ve got a 68 428 .030 and have the same L2257F sealed power pistons in it like “Racerboys” post. 4 reliefs and a 2 1/4” dish.... got a set of #13s that measure 75-76cc and flow about 240cfm. At about 9.7cr it should support a roller 230 to 240 at .050, right? 3.70 9” and a TKO600."

just the name "041" is enough to bring a smile to a poncho but yes thats a short gap to fill between stump and faithful.

Not even close...the valve lift is way less. I think their cam is geared more towards their off the shelf aluminum heads, milder cast heads and their lower lift valve spring packages.

i guess, i mean to a certain extent you can manipulate that by changing the rocker ratios. and i think a lot of people just look at the .050 duration and lobe sep first and then figure the rocker ratio they need to get the lift where they want it.

Started out thinking of a 500hp target and going with some aluminum heads at 72cc's. After pulling one of the heads off and finding a dished piston, just going to stick with the irons and go with it at about 9.7CR. Seeing enough dyno sheets that have been posted, I decided that a big flat torque curve is more what I am really looking for vs a peak HP#. Got a set of Comp aluminum 1.6's that I was running on top of the #13's I had on my 400 when running the Summit 2802. Got pretty much what I need, but always over think it and second guess things a lot. Just have to pick a cam and go with it.

Just some food for thought here.

A few years ago I had a long talk with Rodney Butler and sent him the dyno chart below.

Shortly after the discussion and email they started moving away from the XR276HR cam which had been their "go-to" cam for a lot of pump gas 455 builds. They also frequently used and recommended the Comp XE268 and XE274 cams.

Now we are seeing longer seat timing and much wider LSA's on their website and in their engines.........FWIW.......

An engine needs what it needs
Unfortunately there is a lot more I can't share.

Just note that there is a very big difference in overlap just between the factory 744 and the 041 Cam.
I have no idea what the spec might be between these two roller versions , but if it where my car with a 400 and I did not have at a minimum 3.55 gears out back I would stay away from this roller version of the 041 Cam even if my 400 processed a true 10.5 compression.

I end up stroking the motor to a 461 so the cam is not being used (going to sell it at some point) it was going to be too small so my engine builder had a custom ground Schneider cam made that is just a little bigger than the 041 cam
