Own almost all the Firebird numbers matching series (started buying HPP with the '75 numbers matching issue - and have aqquired a couple of the prior issues) - but I cannot recall ever reading any of the GTO numbers mmatching series - which is why I asked if the series covered any of the other (or all) Pontiac A-bodies ~ I would think it would be nice to have a breakdown for say 1971 T-37/drivetrains for example...

So, is it a 'dog dish hubcap' car or fancier? With AC I assume it is fancier.

Unruhjonny, the only break down I know of is those to do w/HO's that Dan Jensen put together years ago. I think someone here has more info. We do know how many HO's were in each year and what body styles. Don't remember what esle.

Jack - I have yet to see the car or the docs, but it appears to be a wire wheel cover car.

Also - I just got off of the phone with the owner, and unfortunately we have now determined that a one-of-three car it is NOT.
It took a 1" open-end wrench and a peek inside to determine that fact (hint, hint).

It's a one-of-seven car. Neat deal, nonetheless, and we're still going to make the trip to take a look at it.

Okay, then could be a '71 'T-37, post, 455HO, stick. 6-4 speeds and 1-3 speed. Maybe rules that out. Hmmmm.......have to think more about that.

Would it be a black 72 GTO post coupe, ww5, automatic, air conditioning, bench seat and honeycomb wheels? Probably not, as this car is 1 of 7.

So I vote for one of the 3 72 GTO post coupes with 455 HO and M22.

Edit:
I posted this after reading the first page of 20 responses. Didn't see that there were 3 pages. So if it is a wire wheel car, it is not the black post car as it has honeycombs. Sounds like a fun adventure to go see it, whatever it is.

Found out today that it's a one-of-seven, '72 GTO post HO M40 car. Not a one-of-three post WW5 car, as we first thought.

Details as they become available.

I've read the whole 'WW5' rpo code here efore - but would you please care to enlighten me as to what it is?

As I understand all 1972 455 HO cars came standard with functional hoods - so that can't be WW5...

The whole "needed a 1" wrench to figure out if it was a 1 of 3 or 1 of 7"... totally lost me...

And I totally forgot about the whole post versus non-post numbers thing... (the "post" cars were more 'entry level' correct?)

Here's the WW5 option list, thanks to supcarbob who originally posted this.

You slip the wrench around the sway bar to find out the size.

Mike gets the gold star! A 1" open-end wrench won't fit over the WW5 1 1/8" rear bar, and rattles around on the standard equipment 7/8" bar.

ok, I think I get it - so since in 1972 the GTO package was once again relegated to an option package - the 'WW5' denotes a (legit) 1972 455HO GTO??
- or was there another way of ordering a 455HO GTO in 1972 (that mabey didn't include as many bundled options)?

I had previously thought that to order a GTO in 1972 you just clicked the "GTO" option box on a Lemans - which would have included the L78 (the standard engine) - and the 455HO would have been checked off seperatly...

mabey I need to do some reasearch to understand this all... (links anyone?)

Here is a good link to a WW5 optioned 72 GTO.

http://forums.maxperformanceinc.com/...d.php?t=535502

You're right you could only order the WW5 on a GTO in 72 coupe or hardtop. With that WW5 came the extra thick sway bar that is mentioned before. Also some other cool options

Johnny - nope, one could order the 455HO engine separately from the WW5 package.

The WW5 package, as I see it, was the '72 version of the Judge package, but without the stripes and emblems! One actually got more with the WW5 than the Judge, excluding the stripes and decals of course. Refer to Mike Marx's post attachment above.

Here are the two '72 GTO option pages from Eric White's book for your reference. For those who haven't yet bought a copy of Eric's book - I highly recommend it!

Also, it is a great buy compared to a roundport Judge!
