70 ROYAL GTO
This is the current winter project. This is Milt Schornacks 70 GTO "Royal Automotive" race car. The body is currently at FAST Automive in Batesville, IN. Frame is in the pre stages of paint, should have rolling chassis in a few weeks. Stay tuned for restoration pictures from myself and the guys at FAST. If anyone has any pictures of this car please post or let me know, also looking for pictures of HURST shocks. Plan to debut this car in May at Pontiacs in the Park....She should put down a mid 10.? run.

Engine is a 400 ram air iv with custom headers-iron heads. Engine is being built by the same outfit that built the engine in the gold 66 Royal car.

Ron, I was waiting for a post from you or Kevin on this. We've been pretty damn excited about the project, but didn't want to steal your show. We had an awesome visit from Milt the Saturday after Thanksgiving. Several local Pontiac owners brought their rides out to the shop to welcome Milt. Sounds like Kevin, Paul, and Milt have had several conversations since. I've talked with Scott Sims about supplying his Sims Performance torrington bearing cam plate setup for the motor. Milt seemed very impressed with the product. Milt has a lot of interesting stories from back in the day. It was a great experience to meet him and spend a few hours listening. I did manage to finish off the BFG's on my Lemans in Milt's presence. I think he appreciated it. With your permission, I'll post some body in process pictures. -Doug

Well...
it's all Kevin and Milt...along with Paul and his crew. I'm semi-retired! lol Anyway, Kevin posted the pix and I'll relay the story of the original car. Seems Milt got a killer deal on it from Pontiac...a RA IV Judge with no radio, heat or carpet and 4.33 gears. One catch...a GM official from their engineering department had to put 3k miles on it first. Milt...a little disappointed...dropped it off at another dealership to get this prerequisite handled. He received a phone call later that week telling him to come and get the car. When he asked how in the world did anyone put 3k miles on this car so quickly...the reply was..."Don't ask!" Seems the official was not willing to spend the required amount of time in a car with no radio and 4.33 gears! Personally...I would have no problem with it. Anyway...lots of interesting things are happening around this car. The guy that did the original gold leaf lettering is still at it and has agreed to letter the car. Should be a real crowd pleaser when completed. Thanx for all the enthusiasm so far from all involved. I understand sponsorship has been offered up, but since I don't have all the details, I'll hold off on that announcement. Pontiacs rule! Thanx again. Ron

Ron:
Is this the original car? Where has it been or where did it go? I love the “where are they now” stories of any of the old racecars. |

Ron- Looks like some serious metalwork was needed. That one picture, of the RH side after media blasting, looks like a partial quarter had been installed before.
So- what replacement rear quarter panels were used? The Goodmark partials, or were factory NOS pieces sectioned (gawd, I hope that no one would section an NOS quarter, but...). |

Yeah I second Brian's question, original or a replica?

Unfortunately this is not the original car. From what Milt tells me: is that he sold the car to a man who was going to race it on the weekends. When he picked the car up he arrived in a 68 GTO with a trailer. Milt said it was one of the scariest trailers he had ever seen. After being told to invest in a new trailer by several others the worst happened. While leaving the race track, the trailer became unattached from the 68 GTO and ended at the foot of a concrete culvert. It would have been great to restore the original car, but it is long gone. This car is being built from what Milt remembers and the one photograph that we have. While trying to keep the originality of what the original car was, many safety updates and unseen modern technology is being used. This should be a very nice and impressive performing car that will make several passes at many of the Pontiac events. Any suggestions or ideas would be greatly appreciated. We have had a lot of supporters such as Performance years, FAST Automotive and Legendary Interiors, who are helping assemble this car. Without them this car would not be possible!

Parts Used
Because of the high cost and lack of availability of NOS parts, we stuck with reproduction. The guys over at FAST installed quarters, wheel houses and partial trunk section. Front floors needed minor attention, but were still able to be used. This is going to be run hard, so we took every measure to ensure the body will stay together. Thanks for your interest!

great fun!
wish I were there to drink beer for moral support nothing more fun than saving an old pontiac that may otherwise been left for dead. those are nice clean welds and a smooth/clean joint where patch mates with sail panal. mine got a little distorted (they were hung before I purchased car) on my 70 and I had a lot of grinding to do , not to mention, had to use a lot more filler than I wanted to. great work, keep the vision, I can already hear the rumpity, rumpity, rumpity just looking at it! SLASH!
