Exclamation Jim Wangers Interview by Wild About Cars

I have not read all of it yet but thought it would be a good topic for discussion.
Lets not try to pick it all apart. It is good publicity for the Pontiac community and includes all of us here. Part one only.

Hope the link works.

Written by our own Eric White (aka "gtoric").

I doubt there will be too much to pick apart. He usually does his homework.

X2. It gave a good background where Wangers came from and how he moved up. Great article indeed.

Not to be picky, but Jim says that after he won the nationals in 1960 and they call it super duty Monday- Pikes Peak, NASCAR win and U.S. Nationals in drag racing. Jim states Knudsen was not there because he went to Chevrolet.
Knudsen went to Chevrolet at the end of 1961 ( still overseeing the 62 model year Pontiac cars ).
On a side note; Knudsen refused to go to Chevrolet unless the Corporation let him fix the Corvair by first, sway bars, and by 65 double joint axles like Corvette replacing the swing axle.

I found out a couple of years ago Jim was fron Chicago originally.
At the POCI convention last year in St. Charles I asked Jim if it was correct; he yes and that he went to Senn HS on the north side. Then I asked something that every Chicago native must answer - Cubs or White Sox? Being from the north side he said "WHITE SOX!" Since I too am a Sox fan we shook hands firmly and shared a laugh.

Now I find out he went to IIT - my alma mater! Him being a White Sox fan makes sense as IIT is right across the Dan Ryan Expressway - plus they're the better team! I'll have to talk to him about that.
If I would have known he went there I would have had him give a talk on campus back in the 80s!

Well yes! Jim claims in his book Glory Days that the first time ever the word Tiger was used by Pontiac was in a 1963 Tempest add which said " Can you tell which Tempest is the tiger?
But if you look at the 1962 sales brochure in the option section it describes the four speed manual trans as;
" There's a four speed, fully-synchronized stick transmission for TIGERS" ( optional at extra cost ).

As Eric states, he conducted this interview in 1994. The was at our GTO Western Regional at the Queen Mary. I think this was the same show where Wangers first displayed the Ponte Carlo...with a fresh 440 Pontiac under the hood.
