62 heads on a 65 389
hay guys, im running a 65 389 with a set of 75's
someone i know wants to trade me some 1962 heads. the casting numbers for the heads are, 538177 1.88 / 1.60 & 69cc's will these heads bolt on to my 1965 389? Will my intake fit?(casting number is 532422...59 tri power) and will it require a new timing chain cover? or older shall i say. better yet, is it worth tearing my block down for these set of heads? im stuck in the middle!!!... what would you do?? Thanks for your time Brian

whats wrong with the heads you have? What year are 75 heads from? the 177 heads are lame except for a restoration in fact I believe they are 1963 heads. early heads need early intakes. a 1959 intake will work on 59-64 heads. 65 and up are different bolt pattern and even the worst of the later heads are much much better performance wise than the pre 65 heads. It doesnt make sense performance wise to use either a 59 intake or 62-63 heads. Timing chain cover is no issue.
Really you wont see a good effect from later heads until you get to the 1967 and up bigger valve heads and then they wont help much unless the cam is changed and intalke exhaust etc to properly take advantage of the better flowing heads.

from what ive gathered from the net and friends is that these heads will raise the compression of my 389, right now wallace racing tells me that my
1965 # 75heads are 1.88 & 1.6 at a 8.6:1 C/R. they also tell me that these 538177's have a 69cc i wont gain any performance out of these? i know a cam swap is vital to the power output, esp. when goin to 3 duces. if there is performance gains to be had, mabe i would go for the deal. thanks for the input! Brian

The 8.6-1 389's used dished pistons to lower compression. The chamber volume in the heads is the same as the 10.75-1 engines. Check the 2 letter code on the front of the engine to see what you have. The only good intakes that bolts to the early heads are the Edelbrock EP4B (hard to find in good shape) or the 64 high-rise tripower (big $$$). The other trip manifolds for early heads are all flat low-rise types. Stick with what you have IMO.

im running 4 valve relief flat top pistons, 030 over.
so what i get if i do this deal, is the same compression, with a lot of headache on bolting the stuff up, not to mention i dont have any carbs.. i think ill stick with what i got!, Thanks Brian

if you want to change heads, get a BETTER set of heads. You are going backwards with your choice.Do you know if the pistons are in the hole and how much?Do you know how many CCs are in the valve reliefs? You will want to stay under 9.5CR with pump gas.If you want more cam you will want heads that have screwin studs. You can do it right the first time or do it the govenment way.Never the time to do it right but always the time to do it over.Tom

I get 9.8-1 CR with a 30 over 389,41 crushed gasket, pistons 20 in the hole and 6.7 reliefs and 72CC heads.Almost any good head like a 16-670 should be in the 72CC range, now you just need to get all your other numbers firmed up to see how you can get to the 9.5 ratio.Tom
