The Wix 51045 Oil Filter is a popular "small" filter often used in confined areas.
4.828" in length and 2.921" in diameter. .

I have a 68 Firebird which has Doug's D-port headers. I run the Wix 51258 oil filter. I change oil once a year. I remove the 3 bolts that hold the housing on, change filter and install. If u put a thin film of oil on the gasket that meets the block you can use the gasket over and over. Use a silicone of your choice and glue gasket to oil filter housing.

Ran the standard size filters on all our 1st gen Bird drag cars, with 35270 Hedman headers. We used the NAPA 1258, which is said to be the same as the WIX 51258.
But, if the filter side is too close to a header tube, the smaller diameter filters are available in at least 3 lengths, if I remember correctly. These filters also fit some LS engines. So, they are plentiful. For those who like the K&N filters, with the nut on the bottom, I think HP-2006 is the number for the 4 3/4" x 3". https://www.oreillyauto.com/detail/b...hp2006/4396007 Sometimes a filter cross reference is helpful. But, sometimes some filters listed are not exactly the same size. So, you always need to check the specs, before buying a filter you're not familiar with. https://www.oilfilter-crossreference...vert/NAPA/1045 Some here always badmouth the smaller filters. Others have used 'em without problems. Seems that no matter what product I look up reviews for, some say it's great, some say it's trash. Last edited by ponyakr; 06-14-2020 at 10:21 AM. |

This is the filter I use in my header equipped 1969 Firebird. I’ve never had a problem with them.

I'm amazed. I have a 69 Firebird with round port Dougs and I can easily fit Wix 51049 which is the larger 1qt filter. I'm using the 90 degree filter adapter and have no problems getting filters on and off. Personally I would try and run the long branch adapter and get the largest filter I could to fit. Pontiac engineers used the pf24 size filter for a reason and I would attempt to try and get a filter of at least that size to fit. I like the larger filters due to increased capacity and larger filtration area.

Baldwin B30. The largest "small" filter.
