My Moser 12 Bolt Swap, Auto, Driveshaft and Part # Info Inside
Here are some things I'll pass on...
1969 GTO, had 8.2 rear end Moser 12 Bolt, 3:70 gear, 11" Wilwood brakes, no back brace, powercoated, 33 spline Truetrac, stock axle length = $6000 IF you frame notch or tub etc, you must be very clear with them you did this if you ask for a 1 to 2" housing shortening/chop. They have a great online form but this area of the form sucks, no details on drop-down, they called my shop and changed my GN 9" order because they assumed I ordered it wrong, they cost me $800 in powdercoating on their error, they won't take blame and you'll have to make a hard choice, eat it or bail. Truetrac needs Sae 80w-90 heavy duty gear oil Part #: 10043 TH400 trans needed a 57.5" long driveshaft, factory won't fit. PST 3.5" Aluminum was $575, was 1 full week from order to make, ship, receive. 3" steel vs 3.5" Aluminum is 22lbs vs 15lbs, 7lb drop here is nice. You'll need the UMI 5" ID, DS safety loop for 3.5" + DS https://www.umiperformance.com/home/...t-safety-loop/ Rear Shocks need the 1" bearing due to narrow mount Moser bracket offers, Viking has them, $25. I'll drive it again soon after a disastrous 2023 engine mess, this should be plenty to handle my power level and way more.

Can you elaborate about the shock bearings? I'm noticing my Bilstein shocks ride pretty close to the rear end housing with the Moser rear.

Here is a link
https://midwestchassis.com/products/...s-to-1-bearing These are more narrow to fit into the brackets better, I run Viking so that is the part number above. $25 through Viking.

Are those for the coilover brackets or traditional shocks? I was thinking I needed something to move the shock away from the axle a little bit.

Viking Berzerker, Double Adjustable Coilovers.
I tried the BMR bracket but it won't work. I'm getting a custom bracket made for this later, inside mounting too.

I have regular shocks bolted directly to the rear end so I think what I have going on is a different. They aren't rubbing, just a little too close for comfort. For now I added a washer between the shock mount and the rear end.

Here's what it looks like with Coil Overs and the Moser 9", they needed to tilt the shock bracket and the shock isn't as inward as I'd like for a more up and down travel so I might do a custom bracket that relocated the shock inward next Spring.

Does your TrueTrac have a lot of slop in it that feels like backlash is out of whack?
You also mention 80-90w gear lube. Is there an issue with running thicker? 85-140w is very common. .

My mechanic just emailed and when I asked him he checked and said no play in the axles, said 1/8" is somewhat normal I guess.
Tru Trac has specific fluid so as long as it's the mineral type they require the weight is dependant on customer use.

Quote:
I was told conventional gear lube only, nothing synthetic and no friction modifier. I've used valvoline conventional 90w in my TruTrac since it went into my car in 2008.

Same with my TrueTrac - it feels tight and is very quiet. Honestly, I was expecting more slop based on how the backlash felt with no oil in it. Eaton recommends 80w90, so that's what I used. I'm sure there must be a reason they don't recommend a thicker oil.

I knew to run mineral based oil, but I checked the box for oil when I ordered it, it was the Lucas 85w mineral based one, not the syn.
Mine's sloppy, clunks when I put it in gear, and whines when it warms up. Shoot, it whines some when it's cold even. I pulled the cover thinking maybe the cap bolts loosened up, they hadn't, and turned an axle back & forth watching the ring & pinion, the slop is def from the carrier. When I put the cover back on I used Valvoline gear oil, the 85-140w one, hoping the thicker one would help. It did, slightly, but it still clunks, and it still whines. Anyway, that's why I asked. I will call Moser and see if they have any suggestions, I just bought the thing a year ago. Has maybe 500 miles on it max. Might just be nature of the beast, who knows. But it sounds like others are dead silent. .
