Default Fuel return on ‘68 Lemans

Not sure why I never noticed it before but was checking on the rubber hoses by tank and fuel pump on both 68 Lemans verts. One of the cars which is a manual shift, low mileage original engine 350 265 hp and has one steel fuel feed line while our other ‘68 Lemans, low mileage, original drivetrain (speed M-20 Muncie) 350 320hp has a smaller steel return line (along with the steel fuel feed line). Was this a 350 HO performance only thing? Do 68 GTO’s have the return line as well? Both cars built about a week apart in Arlington, Texas.
Thanks

In 69 the criteria for a fuel return line is having a 4bbl and/or AC. Sounds like it was the same in 68 based on your two cars.

Yep, I was under the same impression. AC cars got a return line in 68. My 68 AC equipped, Arlington built GTO has the return line.

I remember looking this up in the MPC books and found the return line listed for all 1968 T/8 applications without any notations for options such as transmission, A/C etc

However, I have heard of several examples of V8 cars from 68 that only had the one line so I am not sure why/how they exist. There must be some reasonable explanation....just not sure what that may be. Curious to find out though....

2-BBL vs 4-BBL, about the only thing I can think of.

That is the most logical idea I have come across so far...

As I mentioned, a car with a 4bbl and/or AC got the return line. A 2bbl car without AC had the single fuel line only. Also iirc (I’m at my cottage so can’t check my books) the single fuel line is also smaller (dual line is 3/8” with 1/4” return versus 5/16” without a return line).
