Default Sometimes the ride pays off. 400 blocks cores

4.5 hour trip from a confusing Craigslist add and having to go through a 3rd party. 9 400 blocks and a couple single heads.

Very nice find, but man all but one of those blocks will need a bead or sand blasting job to get rid of all of that crankcase rust, and all but that one block in terms of that rust will need a line hone or line Bore to get to good metal in the main Bore from what I can see.

I hope it all works out for you and your stocked up now with spares, enjoy!

Kind of unusual I don't see any of those blocks drilled for 4 bolt mains? I guess that good if you want to install splayed caps or just use them as 2 bolt mains.

What's an Ambrose machine? Did a search but came up with nothing.

That’s great those machines.
Nice and clean from rust is what’s needed in the crankcase.
I recall a 455 build up in HPP magazine that left me shocked.
Nothing was done about the surface rust that was in the crankcase.
Even though it was light rust it had to effect the condition of the bearings over time as it got scrubbed off over time before the filter picked it up.

The machine is basically a shot blaster for large parts. Get it free of any oil grease and grime. Clean and dry. Put it in there for a bit and it will looks similar to a new block. After that if the mag test passes you have something to work with.

Looks like you really scored on a supply of good early blocks (67-68) that are excellent
choices for splayed caps.

They changed the block casting where the upper and lower core meet in 1969 (67-68 is better for block durability). You have some production 1600 hp block capability with the right machining. Marty's engine lasted in full race mode for 3 years with out issues until the end. 9 blocks times 3 years on eash one at 1600 hp potential, believe you have some good stock to work with there chiefbigb.
