Well, in the Quest for more horsepower I've decided to build a new motor for Southern Nats. I will need help.
Here is what I want to do.
I have 73 455 std bore block
1. 428 crank
2. choice of 061 or 62 heads.
3. planning on running Crower rods.
4. Want to run 440 combo Need piston advice.
5. will balance assembly.
6. Need cam advice
7. can run either 1:65 or 1:50 roller rockers
8.Performer RPM intake.
9. Qjet carb.
I already have a 70 lemans with Built 350 trans and 2500 stall. Car has 8.5 3:73 posi.
I want to run 11's Any help would be apreciated.

J.E. pistons come in 4.183 but watch the pockets as they are not as deep as others.
#62's but flow will be essential to run 11's
With a 2500 convetor cam in the 230's, low 240's@.050. split profile, but alot of tuning will be reguired with that tight a convetor and a 440.
1.65 for more area under the curve.
Solid, hyd, or roller????
Put good rods and you can tewist it 6800/7000 to run the #.

68-70 Q-Jet with the Part-Throtle Enrichment Top-Plate. Bend actuator tab so the Secondaries open as late as possible.

I'd look at running the #061 heads. Better chamber shape, less valve shrouding for better high-lift flow. My head porter told me that the #061s he did for me were the easiest heads to get the flow numbers from of any he's ported.

Sure you don't want to run a 455 crank? I have a nice one that I'd trade you for that 428...

You might consider SRP pistons... similar to JE but slightly heaver and at less cost. Presuming you are using stock length rods I think they now have a 428 piston.

If you are going to purchase new rods and new pistons, go with the long rod combo and save some money. JBP has the package.

What ewould be the advantage of the long rod over the standard rod combo. Cost?

Blackcat,

Your combo sounds almost like what I'm doing. '70 455 block, 428 crank, Eagle 6.8" BBC rods, Ross pistons, ported #061 heads, solid roller cam (232/242 duration), 1.7 rockers, Street Dominator intake, 800 Q-jet (Hey Dude!!) converter that stalled at 3000 behind my 400. Well, I guess your converter's a bit tighter but you have better gears than.

The longer rods are cheaper because they're BBC, and they give you a more favorable rod/stroke ratio for a bit more torque and higher RPM performance.

Butler sells the Eagle rod/ross piston combos at a good price, 4.185" bore, exactly 440 cubes unless you offset grind the crank. Had my pistons made with extra-deep valve reliefs and an 18cc dish for 9.7:1 CR. Hoping I can run it on pump premium.

Really have no idea how well this will run, but hoping to get kicked off the track for running 11s with spray and no cage.

Will - I don't see why you wouldn't be running 11's without the spray.

OMT, well it sure would be nice to dream I could hit an 11 with no spray. Unfortunately, at 3900+ lbs, with 3.23 gears that's probably somewhat optimistic. Still, with another 150 horses of spray it shouldn't be too out of the bounds of reality.

Blackcat, I bet if you get your heads ported a bit more than mine, and run a bit bigger cam, you can probably do it with those gears. Dunno about the stall though. Seems it's a lot easier with a 455.

Will _ I was not aware of your gears and the car's weight. I would guess 11.3-11.7 with a 150 HP boost. Of course that assumes you get adequate traction.
