Speedo needle bounce
Is it normal for a 72 Lemans to get about 2 mph bounce in the speedo needle? Mine sometimes even bounces about 3 mph. Not constantly, but often.

The cable needs to be lubed with grease because the bounce you intermittently see is the cable hanging up in the sleeve .
There are grease gun adapters that are made to do this. Some repair shops are equipped to do this also so you might just call around. This a cure unless your cable has been too close to the exh system or exh headers and now needs to be replaced.

Or instead of the cable it's the speedometer head going bad. The oil in them dries out after 50 years. No easy fix there except replacing it with a new one or having it rebuilt by someone who knows what they're doing.

It’s possible , if the cable or something near it has been messed with, improper routing could cause that. They don’t like sharp bends. Otherwise I’d look at what was mentioned above. It’s also possible for either the drive or driven gears to wear and cause a bit of a bounce.

Try this on the cable and I was told not to lube the cable within ten inches of where it clips in to the speedometer
|

I remember my 55 Chevy doing much the same, but worse (varied about 50 mph sometimes). During resto, I pulled and cleaned, lubed inner cable and put a drop of oil inside speedo head. That solved it.
The Lemans during resto, I pulled cable, cleaned and light lube. It may be the speedo head is dry. I don't plan on pulling that now. It's not bad. Just wondering if it was normal. Sounds like not. |
