Default Low Compression 400, over 300rwhp.

Here are the general specs on motor I consulted/assisted with, and tuned on my chassis dyno yesterday.

'79 T/A, 400 4spd

- Basic 400 shortblock (built by Len Williams, generic SpeedPro flat-top 4-relief pistons), no exotic or custom parts.
- 6X-4 heads ported by Dave @ SD Performance to ~256cfm @ .550", exhaust crossovers filled, then small hole drilled to provide small amount of heat to intake.
- Box stock Edelbrock Performer
- Custom Q-jet
- HEI distributor
- 2.5 RARE exhaust manifolds
- Lunati HR lifters (no noise)
- 224/236 on a 115 LSA (custom ground, spec'ed by me, to maximize the heads.

Compression ratio ended up being right at 8.3:1. We had wanted 9.0-9.2, but "something" got confused with Mr. Williams about piston selection - so we decided to see what we could get with what we had.

I tweaked the timing, secondary airdoor tension, and (to my surprise) had to go with much richer metering rods (started with CV, ended with AX). With the scoop and aircleaner removed, we got a best of:
312hp and 384tq at the wheels.

Very broad tq and hp curves. HP peaked about 4900, but was still pulling nicely at 5300. I'll try to post a scan later on.

NOTE to T/A owners: The hoodscoop had been opened, but there was a "mesh" insert that covered the opening to block out leaves and such. We lost right at 10hp and 9tq with this aircleaner/filter/scoop installed.

Here is a 488 "Heritage Series" stroker I just finished for Craig B. in Minnesota. Engine has a few substitutions from standard such as the ported Holley Street Dominator intake manifold and custom ground solid roller based on our Stage 5 hydraulic roller. The SEAN MURPHY INDUCTION Quadzilla got the nod for carburetion as the carb supplied was SHOT. Owner supplied the ignition components.

My feelings would be hurt if it didn't put out at least 575-580.

Here is a quick video of the idle with open headers... TURN UP THE BASS!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Pct1oerAW9o

Some particulars are
  • ported 670 heads
  • 10:1 compression
  • 248/256 solid roller w/ .600" lift
  • stainless rocker arm
  • repro chrome valve covers
  • forged eagle 4.5" stroke crank
  • forged eagle h-beams
  • dished forged pistons
  • ported holley street dominator
  • 900 cfm SMI quadzilla q-jet
  • cloyes timing chain
  • bop 1 piece oil pan gasket
  • bop composite distributor gear
  • felpro 1016 gaskets
  • smith bros restricted pushrods
  • ferrea valves
  • viton valve stem seals

Ferrea 2.11"/1,77" valves, 3-angle valve job, K-line valve guides, HD std springs from Spotts, positive valve stem seal on all 16 valves, heads cut against the block and intake side and chambers enlarged to 75cc, all casting flashes removed and pushrod holes elongated. Comp 1.65 roller tip rockers on 7/16 ARP-studs. SCR is 10.07:1.

*Std ´68 intake port matched. ´73 Quadrajet custom built by Kenth on this forum.

*SPC-7/068 cam and Summit double roller gear set.

*´73 455 distributor with Pertronix conversion.

*80gph fuel pump from PPR.

*Melling 54ds oil pump and Clevite 77 bearings.

*Flowtech 1 5/8" headers welded and port matched to gaskets.

The motor is built by me except for the carb and machine work Desktop dyno calculates about 400HP/460ft.lbs

Now that I've got mine up and running, here's the motor going in my 65 Lemans for Drag Week next month:

565 pump gas motor
MR1 block 4.35 bore
Ohio forged 4.75 crank. Omicron polished and IPN treated. Throws clearanced for pistons.
Roland Racing CV-1 heads ported by Bill Anderson
Manley 6.7 rods
Wiseco dished pistons. Little over 11:1 compression
Comp 4/7 swap cam. Need to confirm cam card but around 274/278 and .430 lobe on 114
Comp 1.8 rockers. Ultra Pro Magnums
1050 dominator
Moroso 8 quart pan
MSD dist
Crappy Hedman 2" headers with 3.5 collectors

Turbo 400 and 3.70 gear. Idles under 1,000 rpm's and I'm finding traction to be an issue on the street with my drag radials. Hope to take to the track next weekend. Hope I can get it to hook up.

Here is my 67 Firebird combo...

69 350P, from a 69 2bbl Firebird, complete motor of unknown history from Craigslist ("...it was running when we swapped it out for a 400").

Upgrades before motor install was swapping intake/carb for a 4bbl setup, with new cam/lifters/timing set.

47 heads
Professional Products Crosswind intake (knockoff of Performer RPM)
72 Buick 350 Qjet, Cliff's throttle shaft repair, accelerator pump, and hi flo needle/seat.
HEI, Crane adjustable advance kit.
Summit 2800 cam
TH350 upgraded to V8 clutch specs and hardened roller clutch. Transgo kit.
Hughes GM20BPOHD (2000 stall) converter
BOP 8.2 rear, 3.23's, Powertrax No Slip locker (new install last week)

Best ET/mph so far was my last time out. Ran 15.018 @ 90.79 with soft launch on an open rear. Should be 14's next time out!

Let’s start with some background info, The car (62 Bonneville Convertible) was built by my stepfather in stages over the years. He bought it off a "C" lot in South Tacoma for $1200 in 1989. The car was stock at that point. I think it was the early 2000's he built the Tri Power engine and T400. I never did find a build sheet for the engine so until I tear it down all internals are a mystery. He always had trouble with the tired carbs but eventually got it running decent enough to take a cross country tour with my Mom and a 59 Scotty Tear drop.

We lost him to Leukemia in 2007 and after a few years my mom was ready to part with the car. "Bonnie Girl" or "The mistress" now lives with me (My girlfriend has started calling her the mistress more often than not for some reason?)
As I began addressing the carburation issue I saw he had it tuned very fat, it smelled badly after shutting it off and had difficulties restarting. After leaning it out I discovered why he had it fat. The engine would go dead lean on anything other than a mild acceleration. I worked with a Tri power guy to resolve those issues but it was apparent to me these old carbs would need replaced (they had been professionally rebuilt once). About that time I had a carb fire due to a stuck float and nearly burnt the car down! I knew it was time for a update but everybody that sees this car loves the Tri Power so I didn't want to give up on the theme. After some consideration of putting one of the new bolt on Fuel injection kits in the car I had the thought that I could keep the Tri Power and just run the fuel through the injectors! Hence my moniker 421 Fuellie

Its been a long, tough, expensive, project but the end result is well worth it! Some will love it for its new direction and twist on convention and some will hate it because it defiles its nostalgic roots and that's exactly what I was looking for!

http://youtu.be/7kgdAi3VIjM

Aluminum Intake Tri Power (8782898 ?) any additional info would be appreciated. Is this a re-cast of a factory part? I can’t identify the part number.
The intake has been machined for Electronic Fuel injection bungs, Manifold air temp sensors and Manifold Air Pressure sensor.
All internals and fuel was removed from each carb making them Air doors only. Center carb base plate was re-machined to add a Throttle Position Sensor.
With careful planning I was able to reuse all the stock linkage with minor mods to tuck in in closer to the carbs!
Holley XFI running fuel and spark
Holley Crank trigger and a 60-2 wheel
Aeromotive in tank EFI fuel pump
Mallory Hi-fire spark box and Coil (Holley XFI controlled)
Block is 70/74 .060 over 400 (481988)
Heads are a 67 400 with no traditional ID numbers but a D147 date code (Pics available)
Cam size unknown but it has a very lumpy idle and poor braking from time to time! (Next thing to fix!)
All other internals are unknown.
Longbranch Headers
2.5" duels and cross over.

Engine for my '66 Tempest convertible. '66 YH 421, .030 TRW 428 pistons, stock rods with arp bolts, 744 camshaft, 092 heads with stock valves and crower 68404 springs, ram air manifolds, 1965 tripower. Car runs an M21 4 speed and 3:90 positrac. It is a great street motor. No 1/4 miles times. Idles nicely with a slight loap and doesn't overheat. Has plenty of low end torque.

Here's my 462 that's in my 77 TA. I tried to go with a stock sleeper look.

455 bored .030 over, 6x-4 heads mild port and exhaust enlarged to 1.77, gasket matched, zero decked, forged eagle H beam rods, TRW forged pistons, comp cams XE274, 1969 Pontiac intake with Q-jet, long tube headers into X pipe true dules.

Default Finally my 455 gets built

This has been waiting since 2001 so it damn well better be worth it

1973 455 standard bore
original n crank cut .010 over
Windage tray and crank scraper with HO pump(60psi)
6X-8 heads ported to 263/220 and milled to 90cc for 9.78 SCR
Cross over filled with aluminum
Stainless Ferrea valves with an upgrade to 1.77 exhaust
Hardened exhaust seats and Comp springs set up for the cam
Stump Puller HR 230/236@.050 590/592 lift with 1.5 roller tip rockers
Crower Hippo solid roller lifters
Performer RPM port matched/light port job and milled to match the 8cc mill on heads
800 cfm Quadrajet by SMI Stage 3 set up to match engine and car requirement
MSD 6Al box with Mallory distributor tuned and setup by SunTuned
Composite distributor gear
RobbMc 550HP fuel pump, 1/2" PU and filters
-8AN lines from tank to pump and -6AN lines from pump to carb
Hooker Super Comp ceramic coated 1 3/4" headers into a 2 1/2" Flowmaster setup with H pipe and Flowmaster mufflers
8.2" Pontiac rear with Auburn Posi and Richmond 3.55 gears
Driveshaft safety loop
BOP TH400 trans with new Continental 3000 stall converter from Cliff Ruggles
B and M shift improver kit and B and M Quick shift shifter

Engine had only dyno time on it when I bought it and dyno'd at 390HP with a much smaller Hydraulic cam and stock 4x heads that cc'd at 114. It is currently being installed in my 1971 Lemans Sport and will be chassis dyno'd by a member here(p4msi1) to help fine tune the carb and timing. Once it is broken in I will take it up to my local 1/8 mile track to dial in the rest of the combo as far as suspension and tires go. It will be my daily driver and I am hoping for at least 450HP/500TQ and running at least a mid 12 in the quarter.
I will come back and edit with actual dyno numbers and track time when it is done.
Thank you to all of you here on PY that gave me a lot of advice and the many of you that worked with me on prices for parts(65Warrior, HWYSTR455, SunTuned, Rich D, Cliff R, Jonesy and I'm sure I am forgetting someone but my PM box got deleted and my memory is not what it used to be). Without the help from members here on PY this engine most likely would have never happened or if it did it would be way less power than what I am expecting here.
