Ram air IV recovery
I would like to humbly announce to the GTO world in general and the Ram air IV world in particular that another Ra 4 car has been recovered mostly intact. This past week at Fall Carlisle, I ran across a nice condition orbit orange/sandlewood clone 4 spd judge-with the PHS. The PHS confirmed the RA4 birthright-the car asking $24,500. I was shocked to find a real RA4 car-shocked. Sadly, original engine long gone-7,500 rpm top end with a 6,500 rpm bottom end became a recepie for a short life. Car was 3 owner with current YH short block/Edelbrock alum heads top end installed. Car was originally pepper green/sandlewood int. orginally born no ps/pdb, has both now with funky booster-not GM style,I intend to remove power brakes and return it to manual drums. Also, has m-21 and prob 3:90 posi. Ram air pans missing and has round port headers. According to debrief material, car had lived in penn/maryland area its whole life. Sombody put an aluminum radiator/electric fan combo in it, interior is very nice, eagle gt 2 tires, rally 2s, I bought it for $20,000 even. I know I do not yet have its vin, but does anybody know this car, its provenance, its history? The engine was built by some notable engine firm in the north east but I forget its name-it has a web site. Needless to say I desire to put a correct RA4 motor back in it- you operators sitting on WW blocks/614 heads this is your chance to make some Christmas money from me and yes I know the market. I also need radiator and shround also, as I desire to remove aluminum racing items. Those who want to talk-call me, those who want to sell, call me-904-276-8082, Rick Kenney in Jacksonville, fla.

Darn, wish I went to Carlisle.
I have a WW block from a Pepper Green Judge, that had a green interior. Might be able to help you with some of the drum brake parts too. I will call you in the morning. Doug |

Congrats on the find! I have a complete 70 Ram Air IV engine listed in the for sale forum. It's an SR block and would be perfect for that car!

Sounds a lot like my car - Peppergreen, black guts, RAIV, M21, 4.33, manual drums, manual steering. Mine was black when I found it, P/S, PDB, but doing the same thing - manual drums and steering and back to Peppergreen. Will be done next year. Scott

I saw this car at Carlisle. Checked out PHS and realized it was a non-Judge that was sparsely optioned. I remarked this to the owner and he told me that "RAIV cars were not loaded." Oh really? I pressed him further and he mentioned you couldn't get AC in a RAIV. Okay, sure, but that doesn't mean it couldn't be a loaded GTO, right?
Anyway, I know better than to engage in confounding logic, but the car was impressive to me because it was built to go fast. |

block opinions
Hey gang; I have located two ram air four engines- the first is a original ww short block minus heads, casting dated 7-10 days prior to the approximate build date of my car which appears to be 4th week of Oct, 1969. Please note my car was built at the pontiac, mich assembly plant. The person wants $6000 firm. The other is an sr long block with intake, block casting dated winter, 1974 and can be bought for between $7500 and $8000. Both engines were running when removed from vehicle they were installed in. Both pans were off when I saw them and internals looked clean, no noted rust or bluing. What is the opinion on Sr blocks in particular, and opinions on this situation including price in general.

SR Block without documentation stating that it was replaced by Pontiac is not as good as a WW original. Just my two cents worth. I know others do not agree with this opinion.

I concur with this statement. Original block is long gone, so no matter what you put in there, it will not be original. Personally, I like to look under the hood and see the correct engine code when I look at cars. I can't see the build date or VIN, but I can see the block code, so at car shows, it will come across as the "original" block. JMO.

But why would you want someone to think its ther original block when its not? I think the sr block is the correct way to go with this car. I hate seeing stamped blocks or engines being passed off as original when they are not at car shows. Makes me wonder what else is he hiding about the car.

I think I'm with Don on this question. So many original RAIV motors got scattered from hard driving or racing that seeing an SR block is common. Unless the car has unimpeachable credentials as a one-owner, with its original block - any WW block is going to be suspect anyway. With an SR block - there will never be any questions and no explanation necessary at a show or otherwise.
