Default 1970-1972 Pontiac A-bodies in salvage yards

These are images I've collected over the last 25 years, since I got into these cars (I have a preference for 1971 models). Enjoy, and feel free to add your own similar shots to this thread...before any of you get too excited, most of these pictures were taken 15-20+ years ago.

Here is a '71 LeMans hardtop that has seen better days...taken in Leon's near Culpeper, VA in about 1996.

I was surprised when I came upon this one...1970 LeMans wagon, Pepper green on green interior, all there, could have easily been restored. Entire car including front clip was still there.

1971 GTO. If you look closely you will note the 455-specific motor mount plates (which I snagged for $20!) There was a '71-dated TH400 in the trunk. Rear was gone. Bingham's, circa 1998.

This is from Richard's Auto Salvage in Denton, NC, fall 1989. This car was a manual trans car, and it had eyebrow stripes. I had just moved to Charlotte from MD and I had never seen anything like this in a salvage yard!

Same day in 1989 at Richard's. This car was Cameo white with a black top, black interior, auto/400. I couldn't believe a car like this was in a salvage yard...maybe somebody bought it and restored it.

1971 LeMans in Richard's (I think) but in 1998 (I think). Not sure what color combo this was...maybe Quezal gold, maybe Limekist green...I think the vinyl top was dark green.

1971 LeMans Sport. Castillian bronze with Sandalwood top (gone) and Sandalwood bucket interior. I bought this car in 1995 with a blown headgasket for $375. I tried to drive it home but it didn't make it before puking its guts in a 7-11 parking lot outside Baltimore (I'm sure they appreciated that).

It was really rough (pictures make it look better than it was). I parted it out, snagging the Sandalwood bucket interior that is now in my '71 T-37. It had a custom sport steering wheel, sport mirrors, and some other options I saved. 350/TH350/2.78 car.

1971 LeMans Sport convertible, in Leon's (VA) circa 1990. It was Castillian bronze I believe, black interior, auto, and still had the original 400 with #96 heads present. Note the arrowhead emblem in the grille.

1972 Endura LeMans or GTO. Was surprised it was almost all there. I think this was in Richard's in NC.

This is my 1971 LeMans Sport I restored senior year in high school (1989) and drove to Charlotte for college. It was originally Nordic silver with black top and interior. Some PO had painted it blue, and I had it repainted in a 1980s Cadillac color (Smokey Mountain blue I think). It had the matching #s 350, TH350 and 2.78 open 10 bolt. PO rebuilt motor, added Edelbrock w/ Holley, headers, sounded pretty fast but couldn't hang with 5.0 Mustangs of that day. PO had added hoodpins as well. Interior was extremely clean. Sold in 1991 in MD. Note the shaved fender louvers...I don't know why other than the fenders were both salvage yard '72 fenders, I guess I didn't want to drill holes?

And this is my 1971 T-37 as I got it in 1995 from the granddaughter of the original owner. 95K original miles, sold new in New Brunswick, NJ. Saved from certain rot death in Syracuse (granddaughter was student there...didn't see a winter there fortunately).

Was 350-2bbl, TH350, AC, PS, Laurentian green over Jade bench interior. No vinyl top, as I had specifically searched for. Drove it back to MD for $700!

Now Oct. '71 455 2-bolt with May '71 #96 heads, RAIII manifolds, AC deleted (better than that blue GTO I pictured!) and 3.31 12-bolt posi added. Interior converted to Sandalwood buckets with console using Castillian bronze car pictured previously. Rally gauges and dash tach added along with custom sport steering wheel.

Car originally had 4-wheel manual drum brakes (always seemed strange to me given AC, TH350 and PS) but now has 4-wheel power discs and 15x7 Rallye IIs with no trim rings.

Looking forward to driving this car this summer...finally getting painted after 18 years!

You know this torture, right? Reminds me of when I was growing up in the '70s in rural South Carolina. MANY '60s and '70s GM muscle cars with nothing more than a damaged fender or a bad fuel pump ended up in boneyards, and could literally be had for nothing.

Damn I miss those days.

Yes, it is crazy when I look back at these shots and think about the cars I've seen in yards over the years. I have more, including a bunch of GT-37s in NC, But I haven't found those pics yet...
