I dont post here much but I had purchased most of my supplies from Chad at http://www.autorodtechnologies.com/c...aint-and-audio
He was very helpful in my choices of paint and primer.

FYI this was my first time spraying are car.

Used a DeVilbiss Plus Spray Gun for the color.
Primers I used the Purple Gun from harbor freight.

Glad you asked this Muslcah.
Base gets reduced at 1:1. 4 gallons sprayable. It's a lot for a convertible, I know. But I like having left over color. Saves color matching headaches if anything happens down the road. I intend to make my car a keeper.
I probably should be able to do this car with 1 gallon (2 gallons sprayable). But I'd feel better having a gallon plus 1 quart on hand to start with. Then I think about pricing and the potential of something happening to the car and needing more and choose the extra gallon instead of the quart.
I was happy to have the extra paint on hand with my last project when my El Camino got caught in an unexpected hail storm 2 years ago. I didn't have to repaint the entire car but a pretty good percentage of it.

SPI Universal Clear is also a 1:1 mix. I never mind having extra of their clear. I always end up needing that for things and never buy just a quart. But, it's always better not to buy the hardener until you need it.

Hey Tom. Looks great!
My Bel Air was Pro Spray and I found it to be very good. I guess you know that Chad dropped Pro Spray when they got bought out by Valspar and replaced it with Wanda. Only thing I've used of the Wanda brand so far is primer but I've heard nothing but good things about their paints.

I was planning on going with 1 gallon, plus a quart for the 68 GTO since vinyl top area will only get primer, and I'm keeping original paint on the underside of the trunk.
But then it might be a year between trimming and paint so might be safer to get two gallons to make sure I have enough down the road.

Johnny, Not sure if by you saying “primer” under the vinyl top you mean epoxy primer but it should.
By the way Chad also mixes Ultra 7 Base (Sherwin Williams) which I have found to be an excellent 1:1 base.
I had Solar red mixed in UB7 and painted a hood and it didn’t even need a blend on the tops of fenders because the match was so good. Been using the UB7 and cheaper line Dimension (2:1) for years now.

Roger ... Verdora Green, so not an easy one to match later on.

nyT ... yep, epoxy for sure. And yes I can live without top of the line paint, only looking for an OEM quality look.

I think it wouldn't hurt to not use the expensive stuff for base, but I would suggest you use SPI Universal Clear. It's not relatively expensive either.
I would still check with Chad. You may find his Wanda which is a top paint very near the price of lower grade paints from the major brands.

Have you read Barry's perfect paint job web page? I suggest you do if you haven't yet.

Pay close attention to this part:

"it is always best to use the epoxy as a sealer. Mix up enough epoxy to go around the car with one wet coat and adding a double shot glass of SPI 885 Urethane Reducer per quart. Let the epoxy sit for 30 minutes. Stir one more time and strain. Spray one full wet coat of epoxy over the entire car. The epoxy should sit for 6 hours before spraying basecoat, the best option is let it sit overnight."

I highly suggest you do this sealer coat even if your last sanded coat of primer is also epoxy. Also, activating the base like he suggests is a good thing to do.

Wanda …makes top shelf paints ? I have Nevah seen that name advertised in any Body Shop Magazines….or None of the collision / restoration shops in my area. I can’t see any shop worth it’s salt using any thing but Brand name paint to repair today’s vehicles. Maybe on a 2000….But not on a newer automobile . But hey….in this business…your as good as your last job.

If you use Wanda, it wont go as far as it is a 2:1 mix. Keep that in mind for pricing and how much you want to buy.

Wanda paint is part of the Akzo Nobel brand. It is comparable to Sikkens and Wanda is a Chinese paint Co.

It's a Dutch company.

"Wanda is manufactured in Europe and Asia, as well as at AkzoNobel’s plant in São Bernardo do Campo, São Paulo. It’s now available in the US, Spain, Russia, India, Italy, Australia, Poland, China, and New Zealand."

What would the Iwata equivalent of the SataJet 4000 rp be, assuming they make an equivalent.

Does anyone still use "conventional" guns, meaning not HVLP and not Reduced Pressure Compliant?

The Satajet products seem pretty hard to find reliably.

Are the HVLP and RP guns better than the old conventional pressure guns?

Wrong company. That's an unrelated conglomerate with the same name.

I can't answer your question about Sata guns. I do know Barry has them and likes them. He also owns an Iwata LPH-400. I have heard that the Sata guns are a faster gun than the Iwata. The Iwata also has a wide spray pattern where you typically hold closer to the panel. Also the slow factor of the Iwata is better for beginners and hobbyists that don't paint near as often as pro does.

You sure don't see anyone that uses conventional guns anymore. I still have an old Binks gun but only use it on furniture once in a while using water based products.

Another big advantage with the HVLP guns is the ability to use a cup system for it. I use the DeVilbiss DeKups system. Take a look at those and the 3M PPS system. There are others out there too. This is a must have IMO. No more spills or leaks and you can spray from any angle. Even up side down.

And btw, I was reading an SPI forum post and saw Barry say he thinks Wanda base is as good or better than the major brands. He mentioned Motobase too as being as good or better but Motobase is mixed at 1:1 where Wanda is 2:1.
I don't know the price difference in the two but both are going to be less than the major brands.
