71 Cowl Screen Question
This is on a mid-year 71 Van Nuys build.....and it has lots of survivor qualities.
Can't recall seeing these hex washer screws holding the screen in place on other.non-AC cars I know AC cars use a similar one to hold the cowl damper in place...but not on top of screen.. I guess it could be a line error....or is just a previous owner hack? Any input is appreciated... |

Agree. Had to run out back to check all mine and no washers. Just washer-hex headed screws, A/C or not. Except.......the '73 has no screws and never has. No threads cut into the metal, no broken paint. The screen is still held down pretty well with just the tabs and snaps. Wonder if this was another cost cutting move in '73 and up? |

The screws, and "mostly" in VN cars appeared as cars were all thought to have AC and many had a fresh air vacuum assy installed, then removed as they didn't need it with Non AC. Screws re used and the larger washers added by a owner to keep plastic from cracking. I concurred that in VN this operation was done much earlier in assy. than in Norwood.
I had a 09A( Early 1971 production built in 1970) '71 Norwood and it never had screws, still have the whole cowl.

Green Hornet, Here's my '71 Formula, Van Nuys 05B build date, and the passenger cowl grill (it is an AC car, but is the same set-up for non-AC).

Ok...thanks for everybodys input...
Here is what was there....and I have a hard time believing these screws/washers were installed in ANY factory.... I've decided I'm going to leave them out.....It will look better...and save some weight...as well.. |

What screws hold the screen down in the middle of the windshield?...This one has round head phillips drive.....I usually see 5/16 hex here... Also...on .the black plastic drip shields......We have phillips button head...but 1/4" hex with phillips punch...is common on later builds |

Green Hornet - It's been more than a month and I finally remembered to check out the Firebirds to see what each had for the different years. My '71 Formula has no center screws for the wiper rest tabs on the cowl screen and no drilled holes in the sheet metal beneath. My '70 Formula has 2 different phillips head screws, the captured washer version looks like an interior trim screw that was repurposed here and maybe the other one could be correct for a Norwood '70(???)...not sure. The '78 TA has the same cowl screen with the hex head with integral washer. This is more confusing than ever...and probably doesn't help much.

I cannot attest to if the cowl vent is original to my car, but my car (first week of June Norwood built car) had two hex head screws at the centre wiper rest;
I checked the other screw holes on the passenger side, and they show no evidence of having ever been used.

Ok...thanks again...
Now what about the other end...that attaches to the cowl...? The ones in you last post are another one of those 70 one year only deals.. |

Unrelated, but my 78 only had one of those eyebrow sweeps on the side. Or rather it only had one hole, had neither piece when I got it. No sign of previous repairs or accidentally filled as i stripped it all back prior to redrilling. The point being, with the rush in the factory it's not unusual that the occasional hole doesn't get drilled, and if not a critical item, is ignored when noticed later. So I've ruined the originality by having 2 again!

Green Hornet, Here are the wind/drip shields from the '71 Formula. They look the ones in your pics and they use the phillips button-head screws. They stayed the same on Firebirds from '71 thru '81 ('70's are unique). We confirmed that assertion on Dan's low mileage '78 & '79 TA's...identical. Better late then never they always say,

Thanks for posting...
.Your 78 and 79 must be Norwood builds? I have 3 78 T/A's here (all survivor Van Nuys builds)... and the black splash shields are held on with 7mm hex head screws with a phillips punch in the middle. These are the same style screws that hold the trim tag in place.. |
