34,445 Grand Am two door coupes
8,691 Grand Am four door hardtops I don't know of any further breakdowns by engine size or transmission. |

No breakdowns on drivetrain exist, only how many 2-door and 4-door examples were built.

I remember 7 White '73 GAs at Milford with SD engines but were never sold to the public that way.
GA was first Pontiac I liked the 4 door better than the 2 door, never liked the gills. |

That's what I thought but ran across this and wondered where they got their number from? 187 is the reported 73 GTO coupe 400 manual trans production number?
We took our 73 Lemans GT to the POCI car show in Milford Mi. a couple weeks ago and Ken Lingenfelter stopped and visited with us. Complimented us on the GT and told us about his 73 Grand Am. Made our day!!!! When I checked it out online I noticed the production claim.

I've seen that number for manual transmission cars before, but don't know where it came from. They are very rare in any case.

What I remember is only 400s being available with manual transmissions. All bigger ones were automatic only.

Lingenfelter's info regarding 4-speed G/A production is incorrect. The actual number is not known as the production was never broken down into how many were equipped with each drivetrain (like was done with the '73 GTO). I believe he pulled his number from GTO production (see link).

For 1973 A-bodies out of 248,785 built there were 2,424 four speeds.
These could have been: 400 4bbl 4 speed Muncie, or 350 2bbl 4 speed Saginaw There was also 1 SD-455 in the official 1973 numbers, likely a Grand Am, but little else is known. There were 1113 1973 GTO's with manual transmissions, either 3 speed or 4 speed. The guesstimate is maybe 600-1000 4 speed 1973 Grand Ams. They are not that uncommon. Tim Claremont at the old Grand Am Registry accounted for over 125 of them. 74 is rarer with only 833 4 speeds for all A-bodies.

Yearly model production reports (option totals).
Some are from a friend who has done done research at GMHC.

Agreed. The 187 number has been thrown around for years but if that was accurate, the 25 or so I've seen in the last 15 years in California would likely be a much lower number. Tim's registry would have been unlikely to account for so many as well as these were never super collectable or desired early on unlike the previous GTOs or the Super Duty F-bodies. I also agree that the number made was closer to 500 and maybe even near 1000. The real rare 4 speed Grand Am would be the 4 door, I've only seen 2 of them over the years.

GMHC? Model production reports? Sounds like you've got an "inside man"? Would you care to publicly share this information at any point? First I've heard of it in 30+ years, I'm sure others are in the same boat.

Brian,
Pontiac published production total reports at the end of every production year. They were signed by a guy named P. J. Harworth. I just call them "Harworth Reports" for short. If Ford can have Marti Reports, we can have Harworth Reports. They might even be available from PHS, but I'm not sure. Author Diego Rosenberg was kind enough to spend some time researching production totals. Some other info can be found on the Internet, particularly 76-77. If anybody has a 74 or 75 Harworth Report, I'd trade the 73 for it. Samples of 1973 attached.
