I would say maybe about the same as a 389-400 depending on how cheap you can buy a 301 engine and a 3.75 crank. The spacer was about $80.The intake is the expensive part.Contact Dave if he would do another and how much.If you have time and are a good alu welder you can do one yourself.IMO the best way is to buy the complete 301 engine as you will get the intake to cut the water X over off,the valley pan and the dipstick and tube you would have to go out and buy anyway.I bought the block alone and bought a 326 engine for parts but it did not supply some needed parts. This engine because of not knowing ended up stupid expensive.Tom

I've been looking for the 2007 issue of High Performance Pontiac with the article about a 400 crank being used in a 301. Here's all I found so far. Significant contrast in power. Would sure like to know what one of these looks like after 500 miles on the street.

-Started with an '80 turbo 301 with 4.0 inch bore and 3.0 inch stroke (.030 overbore to give 359ci displacement)
-a 400 crank
2.25 inch rod journals reduced to 2 inches
destroked from 3.75 to 3.52 inches
counterweights turned down 5/8 inch
then balanced
-Scat 6 inch SBC Eagle I-beam rods
2 inch rod journals
-ARP rod bolts
-Clevite 77 bearings
-KB Hypereutectic .030 over 237 SBC pistons
.125 inch raised domes
sealed power rings
-Edelbrock 72cc aluminum heads
3 angle valve job
-10:0:1 compression
-Comp Cams Xtreme Energy hydraulic XE 274 camshaft
230/236 degrees duration at .050
.537/.540 lift Crane 1.65-ratio roller rocker arms
-Custom Intake
-Ford SVO 30lbs injectors
-Granatelli 255-lph in-tank fuel pump
-Mallory fuel-pressure regulator
-BBK 58mm throttle body
-Flow Kooler water pump
-180 degree thermostat
-RARE round-port, long-branch exhaust manifolds for '69 Birds
-and a PCMforless.com custom tune
about 300 rwhp and 340 lb-ft of torque

Tom. A big congrats on taking the time and expending the cash to make that motor happen. I've always advocated these motors for building. The blocks, not the rest of the motor. Pontiac did make changes just enough to cause some problems with bolting older/other parts to them but you proved they are not insurmountable. Someday I would still like to build a small displacement Pontiac using a 3.25 stroke and the 301's 4.030 bore for a 327 higher rpm motor. It would take a custom crank of course which really makes it a high dollar build. I already have two sets of rods ready to go, just need EVERYTHING else. LOL. Again, thank you Tom for what you did.

Mark

I would like to see the build.First SBC rods unless custom wont work with a pontiac crank too narrow, that is why we used BBC.I went with the 326 crank so we did not have to cut the throws as much, actually only about 60 thou. The other is unless he had smaller valves put in the E heads there could be a problem with the valve to bore clearance. They did not dyno the engine?Only chassis?Send me the link if you can find it.This build took so long because of trying to make sure we hit it right.Dave chose the heads and valve dia to max the results.Tom

A friend of mine might have that mag filed away. He's looking. Looks like they chassis dyno'd the car, but that's it. Maybe bare eheads come ready for smaller valves?

Default Tom S 301 Build Whereabouts

Did this motor ever find it's way into a car? Any long term report on performance and reliability? It seemed like a great build. It would be very stealthy in a 78-81 Grand Am or LeMans.

Not in my car,I built it because everyone said it could not be done and make any HP.I sold it BUT just built a 383 301 RA V engine but we had a issue with the custom made hybrid head gaskets. It is now being rebuild with the Butler gaskets like i used in the first build.A little less cam,not sure if it will make the HP of the SD ported Dports. It will go in my 69 firebird. The shop is starting to put it back together next week. The head gaskets would not hold water. We will pressure test it this time!Tom
