Love my long guns but if you want to play hide and seek nothing beats an old Ithaca M37 12ga.

I didn't know about the M1A/M14, but I have read about the M1 Garand and carbine stockpile. Apparently importation cleared Congress in 2012, but the State Department blocked it, and the State Department's move was backed up by Executive Order. Write your Congress person. Hopefully this should change.

It seems ridiculous that US made rifles must face a bunch of import restrictions for what are essentially historical relics and collector pieces.

A Garand is what I would be after. Love their history.

They would never allow the M14's in for civilians, per ATF guidelines the gun would have to be made so no full auto parts would fit, which means a new receiver would have to be made. They might allow them to be be cut up for parts only

Savage .17 HMR Yellow Jacket does it for me. Cheap to shoot and very accurate.

I used to shoot a .270 Parker Hale Mauser and a 25-06 Remington 700 in my reloading days but I got rid of the centerfires. Ammo too expensive and reloading took too much time.

Also have a Ruger 10/22 carbine for open sights and a custom stocked/scoped Remington 597 .22 rimfire. I like to shoot cheap and shoot often.

their was a time when the CMP did sell modified m14's,back in the mid-late 1960's.CMP stripped down the gun, removed all full auto parts.welded up notch in reciever, machined weld down, refinished gun, and sold through normal CMP channels.about 2000 i think.these guns are NOT considered class 3 by the ATF..

Back in the days when you had to fire a minimum of 1,000 rounds in matches each year to be eligible to purchase a rifle through DCM(CMP's predecessor .

I purchased several non-issued, surplus Russian Mosin M44, AK47, PSL and SKS rifles with all the used extras(slings, oilers, cleaning kits) a few years ago and boy have they gone up in value...now nearly double the price for examples for half the quality of rifles now on the market. I wish that I had purchased more!

We have a wonderful new addition to the family!

Yugo M24/47 8mm Mauser. It was my son's birthday this weekend, so I took him shopping. He had been wanting a WW2 German K98 or Mosin, but I had to bring him back to reality with the price. We found this, and brought it home.

It is effectively the same as a K98, except for the bolts don't interchange. My wife even loved it. The wood patina and "maximum oldness" speaks to her. I think she now wants one to hang on the wall.

Time to hit the range this weekend!

Sometimes I think about selling these and get one rifle to do the job of many. Thinking that would be a Armalite AR-10. bt
Yeah I have the Tikka Superlite in .300 win mag. All my guns are for hunting except for a revolver I used to carry while hiking before I had the family. Bear spray now.

Prvi or S&B 8mm Mauser is the most consistant ammo currently on the market. If you're lucky, you may be able to find the GOOD Yugo 8mm ammo manufactured during the 1950s. I lucked into 500 rounds at a decent price a few years ago, but haven't seen any since. If it shoots half as well as my 48A, your son will be pleased.

Resurrection of this thread...

I just dropped an order to the CMP for a small piece of dream fulfillment: I will finally get an M1 Garand. I am psyched!

I've done a lot of the AR stuff (this cabinet is FULL), so I decided to branch out little. And since I got a new pair of glasses, I can't wait to hit the range an put a hurtin' on those 200-300 yard steels on iron sights!

It's always cool getting a new gun, and the suspense of waiting for it to arrive is part of the fun. I have a friend that is signed up with CMP to build his M1 sometime this fall. He is very excited as anyone might expect. Enjoy every moment ! Good luck.

Are those WW2 BAR's still available for sale?? What would one cost?? I think you'd have to be a collector and have a FFL first. Just wondering. Thanks.

You have $25,000? Additionally, you’ll need your tax stamp for a pre 1986 select fire weapon and your year long BATFE background check IF the state in which you live allows you to possess an automatic weapon.

I’m considering purchasing a Special Grade M1 through CMP. Kinda miss my first M1 I purchase back in 1991 for the princely sum of $295(including tax). It was a Greek return rifle.

I'm not sure what a rifle "platform" is, but I have varying interests with rifles.

I have a several sporterized 98 mauser rifles (25-06, 243, 270 to name a few). They are tack drivers and FUN to shoot plus they look better than anything on the rifle rack. All have been accurized (including reloads) and shoot inside an inch at 100yds.

Have a Ruger M77 that was a 7x57 (didnt shoot worth a darn) that I converted to 6.5 creedmoor with a shilen match barrel. This one is a ton of fun to shoot.

I also LOVE my rimfires and shoot them more than anything. CZ 455 22lr and Marlin 917VS. Both are tack drivers and can put 'em all in the same hole all day if you can do the work.

For plinking I like to spray bullets with the M&P 15 AR and I also have a HI point carbine in 45 that is some fun. I have a 22lr bolt conversion for the AR that works well and is also fun.
