Backing issues
Strange question.
My 71 firebird has a Tremec 5 speed, 3:42 rear w factory posi /rear discs (out of a 78 ish bird. The car drives awesome but the problem is when I back. It really hates going backwards. No noises but it just seems like it wants to fight. Even just coasting w clutch in. its like the brakes bind in reverse or something. Any ideas?? Thanks

If you roll to near a stop going forward on level ground without applying the brakes and then go into reverse without hitting the brakes does it still do the same thing?

Will give it a try. What are you thinking either way?
Thanks for responding

Wheel bearings, tie rod ends, idler/Pitman arm joints, ball joints all in good condition? Control arm bushings not wiped-out?
You're sure the alignment is holding when the thrust reverses from forward to backward? How about the rear leafs? Broken rear leaf springs are epidemic on F- and X-bodies. |

What I suggested would help to narrow the issue down to being mechanical with the brakes, or mechanical with the transmission or differential , or rear suspension.
I have seen broken U bolts on the rear suspension allowvone of the rear tires rub the wheel well on reverse moves, and such slop can make the rear U joint bind up.

Thanks, I’ll try backing without brakes being applied prior.
Also, all suspension parts “should be good”. Less than 2000 miles on whole combo. That said, it’s been under construction for 10 years and it’s not like new parts these days are 100% reliable. My suspicion is somehow the brakes are binding but I suppose it could be the transmission. Thanks for your thoughts, I will continue looking and report if I find anything earth shattering.

I would suspect it has something to do with the driveshaft angle being too steep.
