About 90% of the leaf spring stockers run John Calvert's setup. Thats a lot of racers who made the same decision you did. My experiences with 'em have been rewarding.

RAIV55, thanks. i havent done much work to my engine other than a few bolt on like hooker super comp headers, edelbrock performer, and msd coil and cap, but anyway will the caltracs make the car perform better (faster) just by adding the caltracs over the stock suspension?

Slick1, wow, what is that car running?

I noticed little difference, if any, in 60' times when I installed them on my T/A and still had the pump gas 455 in it that was only good for high 12's at 105-106 MPH. When I put the nitrous bomb in the car however and caged it, they worked great.

If the car is hooking up with stock suspension, caltracs probably won't make a huge difference. The gains will be noticeable when you're traction limited and the horsepower/torque exceeds what the stock stuff can effectively control.

I DO THE MONEY/STREET RACE THING BRO, SO THATS CLASSIFIED!! BUT I'LL SAY THIS, OVER MY SLAP BARS WHICH I HAD PRETTY WELL DIALED IN (or so I thought?) THESE THINGS GAVE ME SEVERAL HUNDRETHS OVER MY BEST 60ft WITH THE SLAPPER BARS (any improvement in the 60ft is magnified throughout the 1/4) AND IT STAYS CONSISTANT TIME AFTER TIME! NOW THE ONLY THING I HAVE TO WORRY ABOUT IS TYING THE FRONT END DOWN TO KEEP IT FROM GOING UP TOO HIGH! BUT TRACTION IS AWSOME!

Cal-tracs ROCK!!! Click the link below to see his on the bumper run (pics). This is my buddies 68 Nova BBC, Vortech YSI Blow-thru! It runs consistent 1.28's 60ft. and a best of 1.25.

Jeff Kinsler's 68 Firebird (PY member) runs Cal-tracs and he runs 1.33-1.34 60 ft.'s

They work...period. You will have to spend sometime getting them tune-in, but when you do...hang on! Good Luck!

Pushrod,

They were 295's. We had our best 60ft. with the 275 DR (1.25) but they weren't consistent enough to keep on. There wasn't enough roll-out and the car kept over powering the tires.

They looked big. I'm putting a 325/50/15 DR on my car for next year.

He wants to try the 315's but we can't find anybody that has a set for us to borrow to test fit them. You should def. be happy with the 325's. BTW, how are you fitting them under your bird? Mini-tub?

Brian-

I tried 315's on my car- just the tires no rims. I placed them in the wheelwell and they hit the rear portion of the springs. My springs are moved 1.25". I need 1.75-2.0" total spring (rear of spring) relocation.

THEN I think they will fit.

John

His frame rails are notched as well, but I don't know how much. Thanks for the info.

MrPushrod

How are you going to fit them under the Firebird ?

What size DR do you think is the max on a stock suspension ?

I'm cutting out the entire rear subframe and moving it in about 5 inches or
so............ I'll be able to fit almost any tire I want under the car. Building a
9" for the rear at the same time. I want the biggest drag radial I can get,
the car will have coilovers/ladder bar and it'll be dumped on the ground.

The max on our cars is a 275/60/15 on a 8" wheel with 4.5" of B.S.
Unless you want the tires sticking out the sides.........but that looks like crap.
You can also fit a 28x12.50 et street on that same wheel and it'll still
look really good on a 1st gen car. I hate cars that have the wheels and tires
sticking out.
