I am having what appears to be an electrical problem w/ my 68 gto. The left parking lamp is not working and when I turn on the lights the left turn signal light on the dash comes on and stays on. However, the left turn signal (same bulb) does work correctly, as do all other lamps. The other night I hit the high beams and all lights went out then back on and the parking lamp problem seemed to disappear briefly but came back after turning the lights on and off. I've checked and replaced the bulb so I've ruled that out. I also checked the housing and that seems clean...no corrosion. Any thoughts? Thanks.

I would try to clean the contacts inside the bulb socket with some fine sandpaper or steel wool or something. Sounds like a dirty connection in there. Its pretty common, especially on a 35 yr old car. If that dont fix it look for some cracks in the wires running to the socket, especially inspect areas that look like they may have been cut and spliced before, butt connectors combined with moisture dont last very long. Fix any wire breaks with solder to make a good fix. Good luck finding the problem, its probably something very simple.

First thing to check is the ground wire from the light assy to metal. Any poor ground in this area will cause all kinds of odd problems.

Regards, George

I was having the same type of problems with my car, I agree that it is probably just a simple grounding issue where housing is attached to the front valance panel.

Arrgggh! Thought I had the problem licked as I noticed the grounding strap from the engine to the firewall was broke. So I replaced it...but the problem persists. I checked the housing and all contact areas and everything seems clean. I checked with a mulitmeter and there is current coming through to the housing. I do not see any grounding wires from the housing...should there be?

We trust that you have a metal Valence panel.

Mine is 'glass: I have to run ground wiring to those turn lamps.

The symptoms you described are classic...those were the daise. Keep looking for a bad bulb connection..

When you get totally bored and frustrated with all that,do this:
Check to see how much your Driver Hide-A-Way door is cutting into (and shorting-out) the light harness

Have a nice, bright day.

When checking for power at the front light socket use the socket for your meters ground connection. If the buld contacts in the socket are dirty you can push them out and clean them. Make sure the springs move freely. Alan

Well, finally solved the problem. It was in fact a bad ground from the lamp housing and the valance panel. A little sandpaper to clean up the clips on the valance and the contact areas on the housing and the problem is solved! Guess they weren't as clean as I thought. Thanks for all your help. Just got the car a month and a half ago and a lot of this is fairly new to me...so I'm sure I'll have some more questions soon.
