Default Engine Oil

I was watching some TV program and some company (RP mabey?) was running an ad for engine oil specific for older; not high mileage; engines. As I recall the biggest issue is the reduction of certain elements(zinc??) from most off the shelf oils today. Does anyone know what brand this might have been, ment to write it down but forgot. I need to change the oil for the first time in my 71 vert so I'm wondering if anyone has tried this or a similar oil.

Thanks
Chris

huge debate on here and everywhere about the zddp being removed from motor oils, and its effect on our older engines with flat tappet cams.

do yourself a favor, go to napa, or online and order lucas oil additive, for engine break-in.
add it when you change your oil.
it contains the zinc and "nutrients" your old engine needs.

Do not depends on diesel oils to protect your engine. I am from the diesel performance side of things and own my own twin turbo 12 second daily driver.

I cam tell you diesels have been affected as well, specifically in regards to cam issues. And keep in mind the cams are designed to fail before the tappets to aid in overhaul maintenance.

Newer oils are CJ4. These oils do NOT have the high zinc properties of the old oils. And the wear factor has been evident on relatively low mile engines our those higher on mileage that have changed with the newer oil.

You can still get CI4 + oil. I get Delo 400 in 5's and 55's. Out is the same old oil and is carried for the off road and mining markets.

Remember, the newer diesel designs are using a glorified cat (regen) among urea and other injection techniques to help keep pollutants in check. The zinc just flat kills some of these components.

Sorry to write so much about such a little thing. But CI4 + appears to be able to protect the camshaft and tappets on its own merits alone.

Dave

I run what ever I feel like, but always put in a bottle of STP oil treatment with every oil change.

I don't think you need to run STP, but you should put something in the engine to add the ZDDP (zinc) back into the oil.

Why not just buy Brad Penn, in whatever grade you need, from Amazon.com . Orders of $25 or more ship free with no tax.

whatever you do, make sure you have zinc.

i cant see special ordering oil for 6-7 bucks a quart, when lucas is on the shelf at the parts store.

i dont think the stp has enough zddp. thats a really small bottle of a sludge like material, and you'd need a magnifying glass to read the lable that says something about zddp, but i think it says " contains zddp-like lubricants" or something.
beware of products like "z max" and others, that may not contain zddp at all, and have misleading names..read the labels.
the valvoline race oils contain zinc, but the napa near me only stocks 20w50, i tried that but my engine was REALLY NOISEY until warmed up with that stuff, and that cant be good.
i use rotella,10w30, or 30; but it doesnt have the additive anymore, then i add a bottle of lucas.

i think it was 11 bucks last time. truthfully i would use the brad penn if it were stocked near here. i'm impulsive and its easier just to grab the additive, when i see it at napa.

Ran cheap Walmart oil & STP during break-in.

Switched to thin Synthetic after Break-in.
Will LIKELY go back to adding STP again.

Brad Penn 20W50 for me, I have flat tappet solid cam. I used Brad Penn 30W break in oil first. I even have a case of the (old) GM EOS and added a bottle of that with the Brad Penn...............
