Pontiac ohc 230ci for 1973 Oldsmobile Omega
yesterday I picked-up the 1966 Pontiac ohc 230ci - very complete engine!! and my manual 3speed trans will fit as well
This engine will be the future powerplant of my Oldsmobile Omega 1973 Coupe, as the Chevy 250 block was cracked! Does any timing belt cover fit? |

Carb doesn't look correct but shoot me the number and I'll let you know for sure. That CLEAR Timing belt is very cool. I have never seen anything like that?? Be careful with it when you get to removal I'd love to see it off the engine. Yes 66-68 timing cover will work. 66 is the only year they used an aluminum cover then they switched to fiberglass. my brother and his son are pro mechanics and run their own shop but are no experts on engines.
So they have build up a very good relation to an engine shop over the years which is very close to where I live. This shop is very well respected in the vintage car community in Austria and I had a very long talk with them yesterday. So we will keep the engine as it is - a ohc 6 230ci sprint. I will dismantle it, clean it and than the engine shop will test and measure the block, head, cam and crank. They will than also give me an advise which parts needs to be replace and than I should see if a total kit is required or just single parts. Also if the block needs to be bored or block and head to be milled. And than I'll comeback to get some more advice from you where to go and buy. Thank you all so far |

thank you for your clear explanation! really appreciate that! This coming weekend I will finish dismantling the engine and start cleaning all parts and than I'll bring it in the shop. Kind regards Karl |

"it's Me" ! I see your picture of your "broken exhaust manifold" . ……………….. so, Look up " Marine - Tex " ……… a two part mix , "thick putty kind of paste" , and I've used it for years : to patch 'gas tanks' , Big electric motors , AirPlane Props ( wood two blade props - - for "air boats" ) . So as thick as the broken spot , I think it would work (for a 'cruiser motor' ) , if "the broken area IS CLEANED properly " . . . . . . and would be worth a try. We used this stuff back in my body shop days - - - mostly too repair those front "Fiber-glass Header Panels" on the Olds 88 & 98 , some boats , ect. Last time I looked it was $$$$ , so look at it , and if nothing else - - - it would work until you could find a replacement. I buy the Gray Product in a Qt. size can ………………………….. and, on the older cans - - - the label even stated : can repair "cracked engine blocks" . That clear timing belt is CRAZY. Maybe they "tried" to make something work? Let's hope that there are not a 1/2 dozen bent valves inside?

front suspension finished today - kept it almost factory, just lowered with BMR springs

In Austria I don't know. I ordered the Perfection Clutch kit MU16751 from Rockauto. It was the cheapest one they offered. Bolted right in, pilot bearing was correct, throwout bearing was correct, no issues, Feels good, not too heavy.

Any Pontiac 10.5 offerings should work.
I just order mine as a GTO and everything is the same.

Is there a recommendation for a complete clutch for the ohc with a 3 speed Saginew trans?

Also, I have used "Marine Tex " on my Nova Gas Tank to plug a hole , back in 2010 (still there & NO LEAKS) .
I have my Dads old 53 International p/u that I had cut open the side of that gas tank , for repairs, and "patched that tank - - - back in 1978 , at that body shop" . I even tried "fiberglass tank repair kits" for patching fuel tanks - - - - - they Do - Not hold up = = = = = = = = This stuff WORKS . THAT's 40 PLUS Years on my IH gas tank …………………………………. and, it's hard too find something that holds-up to 'gas tank repairs' . . . .. been there . Just clean your part GOOD , and MIX Properly …………. build it up higher / thicker , and machine or sand down too correct level . jim |

The seller says when he removed it almost 30 years ago from an Impala it was running. He even remembers that he went for a short drive through the vineyards because of this crazy combination.
Peter has his own US car shop and is still rebuilding engines. He gave me a tour in his storage - their must be a ton of other Pontiac, Olds and Chevy blocks, heads, short and longblocks and a few finished engines. Asked to comeback if any issues with the ohc pop up! |

Thanks for the pictures! I agree that it looks pretty complete, and the clear timing belt is very very odd. I also have never seen one like that. I agree with Jeff that the carb looks incorrect for a 66, based on it does not have the "flashpot" attached to the secondary air horn that every 66 Sprint Q-jet I have ever had in my hands had. It also has the large Vent on the float bowl and the Large Tube above the float bowl that was only used on 73/74 Q-Jets. So I suspect it is a 73 or 74 Chevy Carb.
If you are looking for a Aluminum 66 Belt cover I should have 1 left, I would want actual dollars for that one. I could sent you a 67-68 fiberglass one for the price of shipping
