Just curious if there is any advantage or benefit to using a heavier weight oil, say 20/50 as opposed to 10/30. The engine is a 400, 350+hp. The GTO is driven only in the Summer months, May-Nov. I live in ME. Thanks.

Depends on clearances, but lighter oil makes more horsepower and lubricates better on initial start up.

YOUR BEST BET FOR THESE MOTORS IS A STRAIGHT WEIGHT OIL,,,SUMMER MONTHS USE A STRAIGHT 20 WEIGHT...STRAIGHT WEIGHTS DO NOT BREAK DOWN AS EASY AS OTHER OILS...IF YOUR MOTOR USES ANY OIL AT ALL YOU WILL ALSO NOTICE LESS OIL CONSUMPTION....GOOD LUCK N HAVE FUN!!!

I would only use the heavier weight oil to solve problems that might exist. If your clearances are on the large side, the heavier weight oil will be needed to keep pressure up. Or if you are going to be doing hard duty, such as prolonged 3000rpm driving in 90+ temperatures.
Otherwise use a 10-30 weight. almost all engine wear (perhaps 90% or more in a healthy engine?) is caused during the first few seconds after startup. The lighter weight oil circulates and lubricates quicker on startup and when cold. ------------------ |

I stay away from 'straight weight'oils, use a quality multi-viscosity oil....
And by the way the W is not weight, its stands for winter.... I have been running Mobil 1 15-50,year round.. Far better than conventional oil.. Amsoil's great stuff too.. Redlines the best but really cost $$$$... KS-out....

First number indicates the viscosity characteristics, W indicates that oil is winterized and second number indicates the lubricating properties.
10W30= flows like 10 weight oil, is winterized for cold weather use and has the lubrication properties of a 30 weight oil. Hope this helps, Herb
