Question Info / Pic Request: factory 8-lug equipped '62 owners

Guys,

If you own a '62 (either short-trunk Cat/GP or long-trunk Bonne/Star Chief) that is a factory 8-lug car (not a converted car), please share pics of your spare hold down arrangement.

Also:

1- Does/did your spare have what I call the "shower cap" over it?

2- Does/did your spare have the large-diameter sheet metal cover (with the conic, wingnut relief in the center) over it?

Thanks in advance for answering these questions & sharing pics.

Note: I am interested in seeing this stuff in ANY condition, not just restored/perfect cars!

I have a 1960 which is a factory 8 lug car. In the 1960 owners manual it shows the Bonneville with the shower cap and the Star Chief with the metal cover and it did not specify wheel types.

Exclamation cover

Matt, you've seen my GP & it had both the shower cap & the flat wheel cover. I replaced the cap with a repro since it was basically just falling apart. Underneath the flat tin cover & holding the wheel to the body was the toothed ring used to balance the 8 lug's. It was held in place with a wing nut as well as a wing nut holding the flat tin cover. That one had one wing either hacked off or broken off so replaced that with a repro too. Some one must have had one heck of a party in the trunk to damage that part!!
it's so blasted cold out there I don't even want to get the mail but when it does warm up eventually, I'll get ya some picture's. Hope this helps.

My spare is mounted in the front of the trunk on an angle with the big tin cover and the huge wing nut, and the shower cap cover matching the rest of the trunk interior. No toothed metal cover. My first GP, back in 64 was exactly the same.

On page 41 of the accessories section of the '62 Colors & Fabrics book, upper half of the page labeled "Protection Group", there is a picture of the "Spare Tire and Wheel Cover". The caption under it says the cover is "Standard on Bonneville, available for all other models (Exc. Safari)."

That should have been standard. Everyone should be able to blast out with authority.
