Battery
What's the strongest battery available that'll fit inside the stock 70 GTO battery tray? About 12 years ago I bought a pretty decent interstate battery 650 CCA. Since then, I've gone EFI, electric vacuum pump, electric fuel pump, USB ports, clock, cig lighter, ect. I think it's time for an upgrade.

as long as your alternator can handle it, it doesn't really matter. some of those circuits are off when cranking anyway.

Car may set for weeks, I've noticed the USB circuit remains active along with the clock and possibly stereo memory? And it's time for an upgrade.

What no flat screen in the car?
The memory circuits in electronics do not use any more current then a flashing car alarm LED.

I went with an Autozone Duralast Gold Group 24. 700 CCA but the longest reserve minutes at 130.
https://www.autozone.com/batteries-s...dlg/832328_0_0 They have a group size 78 with 800 CCA, but I think it is too wide to fit under the hold down bracket. The Golds have lasted 7 years in my BMWs with no issues at all, and those vehicles are electrical hogs. |

Initially had trouble with Optima, this is what I found out, every battery has a born date, first one I got, didn’t have born date tag on it. Yeah the replace it, but the born date on new battery was 2 years old. Which means it was setting on the shelf for 2 years. Took it back, got one with mouth old born date. Make sure you check that. Because what do you do it’s been set for two years but they charge it when you pick it up and that’s the reason why the born date sticker was missing off the battery. 2 years now no issues alternator is putting out 12 Volts. Checked that also.

I use optima’s all the time have had no issues just put one in a customers car last year works great actually it’s in the shop now for a window fix car starts great. It was installed last year because of slow cranking. The one in my car is 10 years old and still starting car every time but its days are limited and it will become a test stand battery. My2¢

I just use the Interstate batteries in more than a dozen cars here and no issues. Costco has carried them for years and have better prices than the chain stores.
They are mostly all 800 cca's with some a bit less depending on the model. In fact dad has a super start in his GTO that he swapped in a few years ago from a local chain store. It's only 700 cca's and it works just fine hot or cold spinning his 700hp 571 over with EFI, electric fuel pump and other doodads. He used to run a vacuum pump on the car as well until I switched the car over to hydroboost. What becomes more important as electric stuff is added is the alternator output, battery not as critical. |

If your car has a drain on battery and it sits for days at a time or weeks it’s going to drain it down no matter what kind of battery you have. If you have a radio with clock or a clock you’re draining the battery. Use a tender or unhook battery or use a test light to make sure battery has no drain when ignition is off. One other thing check charging system if it’s over charging it’s bad for the battery also. My 2¢
